🎥 One of my favorite stories from Atlantic 10 Commissioner Dan Leibovitz on Coach Chaney’s reaction to the A-10. The @atlantic10 is in greats hands with Leibovitz.

Tyler Matakevich talked to us on this week's OwlScoop podcast about being included on the 2027 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, and Adam Fisher explained what it meant to add a player like USC transfer Jordan Marsh to his roster. Listen here! ➡️ bit.ly/4v6wNGd

Don’t care what story you read/hear, John Chaney was 1000% the first coach to collect cell phones the nite before games. Flip phones w/ no screens but he could see that guys would be up all night & in their own worlds. Nobody could see what was coming around the corner better🦉

Jumaine Jones was a high school teammate of one time Temple guard and Top 50/Top 100 recruit Ronald Blackshear, and they actually overlapped during their respective stints in Philadelphia as well

I'll never forget when I would call Coach Chaney later in life when my kids were in HS and they were playing on their high school teams, coach would have me hand the phone to which ever one was around, or both, and he would proceed to give them advise and life lessons.

Nothing in sports bums be out more than the dismantling of and current rotting carcass that is Sports Illustrated. It was my sports bible for 30 years.
Sports Illustrated deletes writer profile, clears out prediction market vertical, following AI plagiarism accusations awfulannouncing.com/si/sport…

The SI Vault a series of "how I reported/wrote this" video lectures would command from me whatever price they wanted to charge.
Sports Illustrated could make a lot of money if they fixed the SI Vault, made it usable, searchable, complete and easy to read, and put it behind a paywall. Decades worth of great sports writing that you just can’t find anymore.

More than 40 years ago, a young Jim Nantz interviewed for a sports anchor job at CBS Philadelphia. He didn’t get it. Our station would go on to hire a local reporter out in Florida named Ukee Washington instead. While Nantz went on to become a beloved staple in sports broadcasting, Ukee grew to become the heartbeat of CBS News Philadelphia.

#RealBasketballTalk: @NBA @TheJetOnTNT just said what my mentors #JohnHardnett and #CoachChaney taught me “If you are going to turn the ball over I would rather you throw it out of bounds.” @Mhj_5

a dribbler going up the court and a defender coming from behind to steal or tip the ball away. NO, this is not the fault of teammates not warning the ball hander of the defender.   As you can imagine, if you watch any game he coached, these 3 types of turnovers RARELY happened.

And the absolute worst turnover a player could make on a John Chaney team, the type of turnover that would likely lead to a dedicated 60 minute lecture directed at that player the next day in practice, would be ……

Coming in tied at #3 is a skip pass or straight line (no angle) post entry pass.  The 2nd worst way to make a turnover was an offensive charge.

There are countless ways to turn the ball over and while any turnover was not acceptable what most don’t realize is that he viewed the following 3 as absolute moral sins and worse than any other kind:

A thread…In this edition of inside John Chaney’s mind, we discuss the turnover.  It’s no secret that on a John Chaney team the worst thing a player could do was turn the ball over.

There are still so many great people in the space but Philly hoops is no longer the vertically integrated entity it was for decades. Losing the Sonny Hill League and its pillars like John Hardnett, Claude Gross, among other prominent people, has undoubtedly affected every level.
the slow rot of basketball culture in Philadelphia from top to bottom is really, really depressing such a rich history that feels like it's fading in the younger generations
