Research faculty and @EcologyWA members meet with environmental consultant Dr. CE Schmidt for hands-on training in application of SCAQMD Method 25.3 to compost flux sampling
ALT Demonstration of canister and equipment preparation techniques
ALT Dr. Schmidt describing Method 25.3 and answering questions
The method will be used to augment existing measurements of VOC and greenhouse gas emissions at our compost pilot plant using GC-MS, PTR-MS and ICOS laser-based instruments
ALT Prof Jobson and Dr. Schmidt stand on a compost pile and conduct real-time measurements of temperature, ammonia, carbon dioxide and helium (used as a tracer) in the flux chamber stack while a canister and impinger collect an integrated whole air sample for later analysis.
ALT View of a flux sampling dynamic chamber with attached collection chamber and impinger. Condensation from the hot compost is visible on the chamber surfaces. A tube delivers clean air with a helium tracer into the chamber.
ALT A side view of compost pile with sampling equipment on top. The mobile laboratory with advanced instrumentation is visible in the background.
