Rest in peace, Sonny Rollins… Nicknamed the “Saxophone Colossus,” he reshaped modern jazz with fearless improvisation, a towering tenor tone, and timeless classics like Saxophone Colossus and The Bridge. One of the last great bebop giants, his sound and spirit changed jazz forever.

1/ Spathoglottis plicata Blume is a prolific and highly variable terrestrial orchid that grows in both lowland and highland grasslands. It is widespread from Southeast Asia through Malesia to the Pacific Islands (0–2970 m). It is also common here in New Guinea, but is usually found in wide open fields of kunai*. These plants are generally free-flowering throughout the year, which is very nice. An interesting feature of the flower’s lip is the pubescence at the base of the bilobed callus. Sadly, the flowers of my clone (the only one I have) are nearly always cleistogamous, so when one does open, it’s pretty special! *Kunai grass (a local name for Imperata cylindrica) is common here in the highlands of Papua New Guinea and used extensively for thatched roofs. ° ° #nature is my #garden with all the #amazing #tropical #orchids, #plants and #flowers of Papua New Guinea! 🌺🌿🇵🇬

Important! 🚨💯 “museum collections are actively developed, curated, and safely maintained to support research, teaching, and outreach by all. Many of us have taken the existence of such collections for granted, but this is clearly a mistake.” biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Sperm have long been thought of as streamlined DNA delivery vehicles, carrying little more than a father’s genes to the egg. But a new study shows that in mice, sperm may transmit the father’s influence in another way. During their passage through the epididymis, the coiled tube where they mature after leaving the testes, sperm pick up messenger RNAs (mRNAs), RNA transcripts of genes that contain the genetic instructions for making proteins. These mRNAs seem to be transferred to the fertilized egg, where they may affect the developing embryo. Learn more: scim.ag/3R8RUZ2 @NewsfromScience

Often labeled “the world’s most dangerous birds,” cassowaries just got even more intriguing. The aggressive, flightless birds have structures on top of their heads called casques, the purpose of which has long confused scientists. To the human eye, casques look fairly plain—but new research finds this headgear fluoresces under ultraviolet light, possibly aiding the birds’ visual displays.
