🟢 New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will become the first NYC mayor to swear in using the Quran.
During his public ceremony at City Hall, Mamdani will place his hand on Qurans that belonged to his grandfather and grandmother. At a separate private swearing-in, he will also use a Quran that belonged to Arturo Schomburg, the Black Puerto Rican historian, writer, and archivist whose collection helped shape the Harlem Renaissance and founded the Schomburg Center.
Mamdani’s advisers told The New York Times the choice reflects New York’s layered religious, racial, and immigrant history, and marks a long-overdue recognition of Muslims in the city’s civic life.
