When people point to the number of people in overpoliced communities who call 911 as evidence that people in overpoliced communities want policing, I think: Would people still call 911 if they had or knew they had another safer option that actually prevents crime & heals trauma?

My life story has been quite radical, from being incarcerated to becoming a political press secretary and now the Global CMO @RGA. I use storytelling to advocate for people and for justice - that’s why I’m here. My chat with @joshwmarcus for @Independent independent.co.uk/news/world…

Brave formerly-incarcerated New Yorkers like @zakithebarber, @Ash_Prashar and many others have spoken up and spoken out about the very real, lifelong costs of a criminal conviction. After they've served their time, what other debt do they owe? nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-o…

These days in politics, consensus is hard to find. On criminal justice issues, it’s almost unheard of. But for the past two years, the #CleanSlate coalition has grown to include voices from every sector, every perspective, every corner of NYS. It’s unprecedented. 🧵

In NY, Dem lawmakers & Governor are gunning to kill bail reform. Based on police lies tying bail reform to crime. Not facts. And they know this. So: 1000s more Black & Brown people may be jailed pretrial solely bc of police lies. And so police will keep lying to influence policy.

I’m sounding the alarm. For years police have been brazenly lying. Manufacturing damaging falsehoods tying NY bail reform to crime. They’ve been caught in these lies multiple times. Admitted they lied. Yet now Democratic lawmakers on brink of killing bail reform based on them.

2. That same week, the Governor of New York pandered to police lies & fear, & demanded NY lawmakers kill bail reform, reclassify 16 year olds as adults in the criminal system, & indefinitely cage people w/ mental health issues. All to win the Governor’s race at all costs.

A story in two parts: 1. The Governor of New York-Kathy Hochul-wrote a powerful oped rejecting years of police lies that falsely blamed bail reform for violent crime. She stood up for truth & defended bail reform’s success in maximizing freedom, fairness, cost savings, & safety.

These tally marks don’t represent time in prison, but time denied access to employment, housing, and education for 2.3 million New Yorkers with conviction records. Repost to support sealing conviction records to help give them a fresh start.
