“Let me begin by saying what we shouldn’t have to say: The prizes support the First Amendment. We believe in access to government institutions and an independent press. … We stand for civil discourse and against censorship.” #pulitzer #BroughtToYouBy1A

"The First Amendment wasn't just an idea floating above the festival. It was present in every set, every risk, every moment where an artist chose to say exactly what they meant without dialing it back." @RockDNAMag reviews the first-ever @FreelyFest.

QUALIFIED IMMUNITY (BAD) NEWS: Through its so-called "shadow docket," SCOTUS summarily reversed the 2d Cir.'s denial of qualified immunity in Zorn v. Linton and left in place the 5th Cir.'s grant of QI in (@TheFIREorg) case Villarreal v. Alaniz. Dissent(s) in both.

In the dramatic circumstances of war, information must guard against the risk of turning into propaganda. It is every journalist's duty to verify the news, so as not to become a megaphone for power. They must show the suffering that war always brings to populations, which entails showing the face of war and recounting it through the eyes of victims.

Tyler Cowen: highly rated and still underrated.
Think it's worth saying a bit more about the breadth of Tyler Cowen's accomplishments. Each one of these alone would be enough to make most people's careers: 1. Marginal Revolution is the most successful econ blog of all time 2. Emergent Ventures has given grants to ~1,000 ambitious young people 3. Fast Grants awarded $50 million for COVID research 4. The Great Stagnation and other Cowen books continue to be influential 5. Conversations with Tyler has been one the best long-form interview podcasts for years 6. Between the e-learning platform (Marginal Revolution University) and the textbook (Modern Principles of Economics), he's one of the leading economics educators of his generation 7. GMU econ and Mercatus are vibrant intellectual communities and they wouldn't be what they are without Tyler The list could go on and on (his work with Derek Parfit, his culinary contributions, etc). But most of all, Tyler is a mensch. One of the most important things he does is "raise the aspirations of others." He did that for me, and for countless others.

People leaving regular companies: Time for a change! Excited for my next chapter! People leaving AI companies: I have gazed into the endless night and there are shapes out there. We must be kind to one another. I am moving on to study philosophy.

Yesterday, a U.S. immigration court rightly terminated deportation proceedings against Tufts graduate student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was facing deportation because of an op-ed in the student newspaper. No one in the United States, citizen or visa-holder, should fear government retribution for voicing their opinion. We've been proud to support Rümeysa's right to free speech in the courts.

FILED: Detaining Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk for writing an op-ed critical of Israel is both unlawful and un-American. Now, FIRE is joined by @ncacensorship, @Cato, @PENamerica, @Rutherford_Inst, and others in standing with Ms. Öztürk against this authoritarian act.

The recent Minnesota church protest that resulted in multiple people being arrested — including Don Lemon, who said he was at the scene to report on the protest — has raised questions about the boundaries of several First Amendment freedoms. Here's what to know.

IJ is the best. Prettis are probably overwhelmed with offers to talk about their case — but this one is tops.
I'm a lawyer with the non-profit @IJ. We have the nation's top federal accountability practice and recently won an FBI wrong-house raid case in the Supreme Court. If you can put me in touch with the Pretti family, I would very much like to speak with them. We work for free.

A judge has unsealed the memo ordering the detention & deportation of Rümeysa Öztürk. It confirms the sole evidence against her was that she co-wrote an op-ed the government disliked. Here she is being arrested by men in plainclothes. Over an op-ed.

Rather astonishing document. A student detained for an op-ed in which she voices no antisemitism or violent beliefs — and it’s all laid out by the government’s own internal memo.
Here is the newly-unsealed State Department memo confirming -- finally -- that the detention of Tufts student Rümeysa Öztürk was based on an op-ed. No antisemitic activity. No support of terrorism. An op-ed in a student newspaper.

“The files on Öztürk … indicate further that the government relied solely on the inferences made from an op-ed she wrote for the student newspaper to carry out the revocation of her visa, her arrest, and her detention.” They had nothing, and they knew they had nothing.

This video is making the rounds — and it’s one every American should see. Law enforcement showing up on Americans’ doorsteps for lawful political speech — speech that doesn’t even remotely rise to the level of incitement — is absolutely intolerable in a free society.
The Miami Beach mayor’s office is now flagging citizen’s Facebook posts and sending police to their doors to intimidate them for criticism of the mayor. This video is absolutely outrageous.

Are there Fourth Amendment limits—and if so, what—on taking a person's picture and uploading it to a facial recognition database during a Terry stop for immigration violations? No cases on this. And without a Bivens remedy, I'm not sure there will ever be any cases on this.
