Really nervous to promote this post but students disappointed with their A-levels have contacted me, worried they won't get into uni & I hope that sharing my bumpy academic journey will ease their minds. Anyone can do science! 🥳 #scicomm#WomenInScienceabioblog.wordpress.com/2019/…
Lily #Research Manager @ABioBlog was delighted to attend the #Cambridge Paediatric Mitochondrial Meeting @cam_mito Maria talked about the important role of #patients in research & how The #LilyFoundation are working hard to ensure research is truly patient-focused.
New study from us:

High mtDNA copy number promotes lung cancer growth in the mouse, whereas mtDNA depletion in tumor cells reduces tumor growth. This tumor-intrinsic role for mtDNA can be exploited for development of future lung cancer therapies.
I'm running a masters class on Microsporidia and dsDNA viruses of arthropods today for Universidad Austral de Chile! 🇨🇱 🦀🦋
I'm excited to see what everyone thinks, and to see if I can convince all in attendance to go out and search for new species!
Rest in peace to the guy who quite literally wooped with joy when I told him he could finally call me Dr O’Hanlon. One of my biggest supporters and favourite people in the whole world.
Until we meet again Granda 🤍

During evolution fragments of mitochondrial genome have been inserted into the nuclear genome - like viral pieces of DNA!
We now find that mito-nuclear DNA transfer happens in the human brain along the lifespan and every few days in cultured cells.
