Son Excellence @GeneralNeva, Président de la République du #Burundi et Président en exercice de @_AfricanUnion, a reçu en audience Ambassadeur Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Président de la Commission de l’Union africaine, en visite au Burundi dans le cadre de la réunion virtuelle de haut niveau convoquée par le Président de l'Union Africaine . Prévue ce 16 juin 2026 à partir du Palais Ntare Rushatsi, cette rencontre réunira en ligne les Chefs d’Etat et de Gouvernement africains et les partenaires sur la flambée d’Ébola (maladie à virus Bundibugyo) afin de renforcer la coordination des efforts de riposte. Au cours de leurs échanges, les deux hautes autorités ont également abordé plusieurs questions d’intérêt continental, notamment la promotion du développement durable, le renforcement de la paix et de la sécurité, ainsi que la gestion des crises humanitaires et sanitaires en Afrique.

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, was received at the Presidential Palace in Bujumbura by H.E. Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of #Burundi & Chairperson of the Assembly of the AU, ahead of the AU Summit on #Ebola, which will be convened under President Ndayishimiye’s leadership tomorrow. During their meeting, Chairperson Youssouf @ymahmoudali briefed President Ndayishimiye on the evolving Ebola situation on the continent, drawing on assessments and data provided by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (@AfricaCDC ), as well as ongoing response efforts by affected Member States. He also highlighted the solidarity demonstrated through the contributions and support extended by AU Member States & international partners. They also exchanged views on a range of strategic priorities of the Union, including the ongoing AU institutional reform process aimed at enhancing the effectiveness, efficiency, & responsiveness of the organisation. The Chairperson commended the leadership of H.E. @WilliamsRuto, President of the Republic of Kenya, in advancing this important agenda. The Chairperson provided a comprehensive update on the AU's peace, security, & mediation efforts, including initiatives to address the situations in Sudan, South Sudan, & the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as efforts to support the restoration of constitutional order in the Sahel region. He expressed his appreciation to President Ndayishimiye for his steadfast leadership & continued support for these continental endeavors. President Ndayishimiye thanked the Chairperson for his visit & for the comprehensive briefing on these critical issues. The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, this morning convened members of his Cabinet to bid farewell to his long-time colleague & friend, H.E. Amb. @souefmo_elamine, the outgoing Chief of Staff of the Commission, who has been appointed as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Central Africa. The Chairperson @ymahmoudali expressed profound appreciation for Ambassador Souef’s distinguished service to the AU & to the continent, noting his invaluable contributions across a range of leadership roles, particularly in the fields of peacebuilding. The Chairperson described Amb. Souef as a statesman of exceptional wisdom & a distinguished diplomat whose leadership, sound judgment, & commitment to dialogue have helped navigate some of the continent’s most complex challenges with tact, discretion, & professionalism. H.E. Mr Youssouf further commended Souef for his unwavering dedication to the AU Commission, underscoring that his service as Chief of Staff had strengthened the institution & contributed significantly to advancing its mission & strategic objectives. While wishing him every success in his new responsibilities at the UN, the Chairperson affirmed that Amb. Souef would remain part of the AU family, whose legacy of service & commitment to Africa will continue to inspire future generations.

Un instant de gratitude, à l’aube d’un nouveau chapitre de mon engagement au service de la paix, de la sécurité et du développement du continent. This morning, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere, I had the honor of sharing a final moment with members of the Offices of the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the Commissioners, colleagues from various departments of the Commission, representatives of Member States, partners, and members of the diplomatic corps. A moment of gratitude, as I embark on a new chapter in my commitment to serving the peace, security, and development of the continent. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf @ymahmoudali, for his trust and leadership. I also extend my sincere thanks to all the staff of the Commission, as well as to the various partners of the African Union with whom I have had the privilege of working in the service of pan-African ideals, the aspirations of our continent, and the implementation of Agenda 2063. A special thought goes to my two deputies as well as to all members of the Cabinet. I commend their professionalism, commitment, and sense of duty, which have been invaluable sources of support throughout this shared journey. I would also like to extend my warmest congratulations to Dr. Yann Bedzigui on his appointment as Chief of Staff to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission. I wish him every success in fulfilling this noble mission.
