California is losing its fossil fuel refining capacity *faster* than the rate of fossil fuel use decline, forcing CA to import dirtier foreign fuels to cover the gap while increasing costs and emissions. Vibes based outcome that’s bad for the climate, bad for the economy.

Rubio: President Kennedy announced that we were going to put a man on the moon. We did it. We are a nation founded on doing what no one else dared to do. And at some level, that's what this whole company, what UFC has been

Unsheltered homelessness is a public health and safety disaster, especially for homeless individuals themselves
1 dead and 1 sickened from a bacterial outbreak in Berkeley. "Both individuals lived together in a recreational vehicle in which they had been trapping, feeding and breeding wild rats. In addition, the vehicle was severely infested with wild rats that were not in cages." berkeleyca.gov/sites/default…

The North Bay is never mentioned as a beneficiary of SF’s dysfunction and its due largely to the .25 mile gap btwn Larkspur Ferry and the SMART train. Connect them and you unlock the North w/pleasant, reliable transit from FiDi to Santa Rosa @smarttrain @MTCBATA @GoldenGateFerry

San Francisco is booming. But here is the deal, the ability to absorb growth is limited and constrained by housing. So I expect for practical reasons startup formation to spread geographically and yes, the return of remote work to reach and attract talent.

Embarrassing
A single church in Austin is going to build more homes than the entire city of San Francisco has built this year.

Embarrassing and self inflicted
California Dethroned: Fortune 500 Crown Goes to Texas. This isn’t “California Derangement Syndrome” as Gov. Gavin Newsom claims. This is the economic reality by businesses to California’s toxic business climate, and as the Billionaire Tax threat looms large. @CaliforniaGlobe californiaglobe.com/fr/calif…

Just brutal. Under any other president America’s 250th birthday would have been an absolute BASH. All the best artists from across the country.
The "Freedom 250" concerts scheduled in Washington, D.C. have been officially canceled by President Donald J. Trump, after almost all of the artists bailed. The event will be replaced with “The Greatest Rally EVER!” — starring Trump and ’80s country hitmaker Lee Greenwood. variety.com/2026/music/news/…

Despite some bogus grants, a lot of government is like this cartoon. I bet this "small team" would find a line item for "screwworm sterilization" and delete it, not knowing that they just devastated American farming: theatlantic.com/science/arch…

Both housing costs and drug use contribute to homelessness. Rates of illicit drug use are strongly correlated with rates of homelessness (2025) w/2 notable outliers: CA and HI, who have #1 and 2 highest housing cost burden in the US.

IN 2025 CA's homeless pop declined for the 1st time in 8 yrs and its unsheltered pop declined for the 1st time 11 yrs. Since COVID CA's homeless pop is 13% vs. 35% in the other 49 states. This an interesting correlation with homeless rates and substance use. Link in comments.

The 2025 homeless estimates are FINALLY up. Initial takeaway: CA's homeless pop has peaked and is slowly declining, esp relative to US trends. Since 2020, CA is far below the US avg in the growth of homelessness overall and unsheltered. I'll keep updating this thread...
