Not even just fanbases, communities and hobbies as a whole. 5 minutes on the hobby drama subreddit and you’ll realise that even the underwater basket weaving community has toxic people and elements in it…

"The _____ fanbase sucks" applies to almost every fanbase because ultimately people generally just suck. It has nothing to do with the IP in question.

The beautiful thing about the ogre meme imo is that all of the anxiety is coming from a genuine effort to engage with the work. It is admirable to be Ogre. In college the class Ogre during literature courses was a crucial participant cause they would always ask the best questions

I think this is all downstream of a critical mass of people truly internalizing the fact that they can type literally any sequence of words and hit “Post” and there will likely be no consequences

Ppl will misread your sentence because they can't read and then tell you to take accountability for how it made them feel because they can't read

I would warn people against the belief that any individual or group has been so specifically, thoroughly, and uniquely victimized that it is categorically impossible that they themselves are capable of any form of violence. It is dangerous and it should not be dignified.

ppl really should stop equating victimhood with a moral cleanliness because those really are not connected no matter how much everyone wants them to be

Imagine sending these back five years ago and asking people to try to figure out the joke
PICARD: Data, shields up DATA: Brilliant! Shields can reduce damage we sustain. Not immunity. Not hubris. Just prudence. It's not precaution—it's strategy. [camera shakes] WORF: HULL BREACHES ON NINE DECKS DATA: Here's what happened: you told me to raise shields, and I didn't

One thing that bothers me to no end in the discourse around reading and artificial intelligence is when people say there's no point in reading a whole book if they can get the relevant information in a short AI summary. A book isn't a list of bullet points!

Charles III is not a direct descendant of Charles I or Charles II. But William is (because Diana was).
What is your favorite historical fact?

There's a ton of books like this, but I do think we (as historians) also overcorrect a lot in our messaging. A lot of books are flawed messengers for interesting topics but fine compared to the alternative of people reading nothing Better to 'yes and' their readings than shame
sometimes I'll hear about an interesting sounding history book, and then I do some more research and learn that historians actually consider it the stupid book for morons that you should only read if you want to be wrong about everything

feels like there’s this problem across mediums where a lot of online people feel like their morality is directly tied to their media consumption rather than like, the things they actually do

Us Westerners learn one fact about a place and then assume their entire society revolves around this fact like it’s a planet in Star Wars. See — Korean gender polarization, SEA sex tourism, Baltic SS collaboration, Gulf State forced labor, Mexican/Colombian cartels, etc.
I remember during the mid-10s when I was in the prime of my Burmese elephant research I encountered an archetypal parochial Brooklyn millennial who called me a "passport bro" and "sketchy" for doing that. I assume if I'd been going to the UK or Toronto I wouldn't have been called that. Anyway, I realized I shared nothing in common with such people (even though we'd gone to similar schools etc).

Don’t calque the name of Chinese food, just say “Zhajiangmian”. If westerners are fine with Ramen than “stretched noodle” then they should be fine with Zhajiangmian
