⭕️ Guatemala agrees to joint US military strikes inside its territory as Trump administration expands Latin American military campaign
Guatemala has agreed to allow joint US airstrikes and military operations inside its borders targeting alleged drug trafficking groups, according to three people familiar with the talks cited by the New York Times. President Bernardo Arévalo agreed to the deal in a call with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth last week, with operations set to begin as early as next month.
Guatemala becomes the second country after Ecuador to accept such an arrangement. Honduras is next on the Pentagon's list, according to two people familiar with the plans. This forms part of a broader strategy, advocated by Stephen Miller and Pentagon policy official Joseph Humire, to normalize US military presence across Latin America as leverage to pressure Mexico into accepting joint counterdrug operations. President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has so far firmly rejected those requests.
Experts say the boat strikes may be illegal and carry legal risks for the Pentagon. An expansion of that effort inside Latin American countries may come with even more legal risk, people familiar with the effort said.
In March, a joint US-Ecuador strike hit a civilian cattle and dairy farm, not the drug trafficking compound Hegseth boasted about destroying. Since September, 59 US boat strikes in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific have killed at least 196 people, with the Trump administration providing little evidence the targets were drug smugglers.
