The Somali Opposition’s 2026 Argument Is President Hassan Sheikh’s 2021 Argument: Somalia Needs a Fair Process If you watch this video or read the transcript, you will not be able to unsee it. In 2021, when President @HassanSMohamud was in opposition, he made one of the most articulate arguments against electoral manipulation and mandate extension. The following is a direct translation of a video statement he made at the time. The video is attached. The irony of ironies is that today he stands accused of doing precisely what he vowed to resist. More remarkably, the President appears to expect people to (a) forget his resistance in 2021, (b) accept his dictates today, and (c) believe that if he plays hardball or attempts to subdue the opposition, they will simply fold. Every Somali knows Somalis do not fold. What makes this even more striking is that President Hassan Sheikh was speaking about what he feared President Farmaajo might do. By contrast, President Hassan Sheikh has already established his own electoral commission, designed his own processes, and applied them in both Banadir and Southwest State—processes that ultimately produced victories for his candidates. His words deserve to be revisited: “Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo is demanding that we choose between two options, neither of which is acceptable to us: an election model that he has designed in his own mind, one that is rigged and predetermined, where he is 100 percent certain that he will become president tomorrow. He is not proposing competition; he is proposing his own coronation. The other option he is proposing is that he extends his mandate and remains in office. We accept neither. He is telling us: make your choice—either I stay, or the election will be conducted according to the model that serves me. Neither is acceptable. ‘I will extend my mandate’ is not acceptable. ‘The election model will be whatever I want it to be’ is not acceptable. Elections determine the destiny of this nation.
