Google employee about to learn about Goodhearts law:
How many technologies are stuck in a local optima? Big loudspeakers basically peaked in the 1970s. Obviously weโ€™ve gotten somewhat better, but itโ€™s a lot closer to: โ€œa couple % more accurateโ€ than โ€œthe average person immediately notices the 50-year technological progressโ€ Miniaturization has improved a lot, so has digital signal processing, amplification. But take a high end setup from 50 years ago, sit in the sweet spot at the same volumeโ€ฆit wonโ€™t feel radically different. Iโ€™m trying to think of other fields where the underlying principles were so mature that half a century of progress in materials/software/electronics is underwhelming. Camera Lenses seem like a good candidate. Non-electronic instruments is another; itโ€™s not like cellos have gotten that much better in the last ~300 years.

I'm compiling 60 kloc of C on a Power Macintosh G3. Though to be fair, I'm not using a spinning rust hard drive, I'm using a Compact Flash card I pulled out of an old digital camera.
Replying to @JuddLegum @elonmusk
In my initial run, which processed the first 60,000 rows, I did not find these awardsโ€”my hard drive overheated long before I could complete a full pass through the database. In a later run, which I referenced in another post, I did identify two such awards. That discrepancy is a matter of sampling size, not an issue with the query itself. Iโ€™ll now attempt a full run, which should capture the awards you found.

It wasn't him. The guy was too spry. It sure as hell looked like him though. And that's why I'm not in jail right now. An old guy looked too spry
We were rushing through DCA today and I think we saw Mitch McConnell. By the time it registered and my partner and I shot each other a side eye he was too far gone to fire off a good, "Hey Mitch, fuck you!"

A screencap from a political ad:
Omg they did a male version of the โ€˜secret voteโ€™ ad and itโ€™s even better than the female version.

I am in key largo, where the government dosed people and dolphins with LSD, and also someone jacked off the dolphin. There's a restaurant next to where they did this. On Fridays there's a fish fry.

Volunteer naturalist Margaret Howe Lovatt set out on a NASA-funded experiment to prove that dolphins could be taught English, living in close quarters with the marine mammals for almost two months. By the end of the experiment, Lovatt claimed she had fallen in love: โ€œThat relationship of having to be together sort of turned into really enjoying being together, and wanting to be together, and missing him when he wasnโ€™t there.โ€

Ap style is predicted on conciseness, or fitting the most text in a piece, because the length of a story is give in 'inches', how many lines of text it takes in a dead-tree newspaper. Dead tree newspapers are gone, and there is no limit on the Internet.

This carbrain doesn't want a to make Geary Blvd safer for pedestrians or improve transit by adding a dedicated bus lane, anyway here's the yelp page for his business, just in case you were curious: yelp.com/biz/joe-s-ice-creamโ€ฆ

The Angled Parking along Geary Merchants corridor has stayed for over 100 years. The diagonal orientation of parked vehicles creates a visually appealing streetscape, enhancing the overall ambience of the area.

Yeah, bro, you should totally test those fireworks you bought this weekend. Make sure they're good for the fourth of July.

You may think this is my commentary about some recent kerfuffle, but no, it's completely unrelated to current events and totally evergreen content.
