For decades, the Ganga's care was the work of a ministry. A few hundred officials, a handful of state agencies, and a citizen who could only watch from the bank. Twelve years of Namami Gange has changed who does the work. A river that was managed from above is now being protected from beside. - Over 45,000 Ganga Doots walking her ghats, picking up the plastic, talking to the next village. - 5,972 Ganga Praharis trained to monitor, to report, to safeguard the stretch they call home. - 139 District Ganga Committees, headed by district magistrates, have met over 5,477 times. The geography of the work now matches the geography of the river. A village in Bhagalpur is no longer downstream of decisions made somewhere else. It is making decisions of its own. A teacher in Varanasi can sign up to be a Doot. A young woman in Patna can be trained as a Prahari. A headman in Buxar sits at the same table as a CPCB officer. It is not every village. Not every district. Not yet. But for the first time, she is no longer just worshipped from her banks. She is being protected from them. Every citizen on her bank is now her caretaker.
