This, by a former colleague, is horrifying but all too familiar. Universities paying vast sums to management companies who tell them to "streamline" teaching in ways that are fundamentally unacademic and not in the interests of students... For shame. ft.com/content/5032f1bd-7196…

The HE situation is absolutely dire. When will proper support and intervention happen? We are losing vital subjects in humanities and sciences.
Universities now destroy 'departments' (now only course housing in practice) entirely based on last year's recruitment numbers relative to the cost of running the course. IOW, research is dead in the UK HE.

No @BBCNews - you can't send out a breaking news alert to millions of people across the UK that begins "Sir David Attenborough..." the day before his 100th birthday. The entire country just took a sharp intake of breath.

More than 20 years ago when starting out as a young journo I had the great privilege of meeting Bob Woodward, to interview him about his latest book and Watergate. This week’s layoffs have been devastating. Hoping WaPo can continue to deliver outstanding journalism in tough times

The old gag that you need strong peripheral vision to notice Australia from Washington was always nonsense, and never more so than since @MikeMillerDC started cover this beat with such clear eyes and smarts. Terrific coverage.
It was an honor to be @washingtonpost's first Sydney bureau chief. Unfortunately, I'm also the last. The paper is shrinking foreign coverage. I've lost my job. Worse, millions of readers will lose my colleagues' brilliant coverage. At a time of tumult, we need more info, not less

The king is dead. I’m told John died peacefully at home. And I’m sad to hear it. We were friends…we had a fierce feud…we made up and were friends again. There was no better broadcaster in all the long history of radio. ‘And you be kind to each other…’ smh.com.au/national/nsw/talk…

A stairway to heaven. This is the banned book staircase created by Newport Public Library, Oregon. A timely reminder how books lift you up & the fact that it’s only control freaks, killjoys & prudes who want to police what you do between the covers. #bookban

John Frew's is the best overview of a - maybe the - key driver of the slashing of humanities disciplines/academics/courses: a consultant groupthink that works via interlocking memberships and dependencies of university executives and councils, and the firms they hire for advice.
One in three Australian universities has a consultant or ex-consultant on its governing body. Advisers are the governors. Why does the ALP still let consultancies rule-and milk-our universities? Journalists, please, start asking harder questions. Read: tinyurl.com/yw63farh

#Breaking | ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences will not face structural changes at this time. No renaming, merging, or disestablishment of areas. Change management appears to have been halted, even walked back completely. It’s unclear the impacts of this announcement on music.

And what a disastrous year for the ANU it has been.
Today is the 1-year anniversary of Renew ANU. @NTEUnion members at @ourANU have worked together, and: 🟣 The VC has resigned 🟣 We've saved 160 involuntary job losses. Today, ANU Council considers our petition to dismiss the Chancellor. My recent op-ed outlines why they should.
