Bashaw Lab @Penn. We study the molecular mechanisms of axon guidance in flies 🪰 & mice 🐁 | Birth place of the DrosoPHILA science outreach program in Philly
When I started posting on TikTok, I legitimately thought other scientists would laugh at me. I kept it a secret as long as I could.
3 years later, these same efforts are being recognized by the world’s most prestigious neuroscience society 🤯

There's still time to register for #Axon2023! Abstract and early registration deadline on July 30th 📆. You can't miss this opportunity to hear about the latest science in neuro development, plasticity and regeneration in the beautiful town of Altea on the coast of Spain 🇪🇸
Congratulations @BrodskyIgor on receiving the @pennbgs 2022 Michael P. Nusbaum Graduate Student Mentoring Award! Truly well-deserved recognition for your outstanding contributions as a mentor to many @CAMBUpenn & @IGGPenn students within & outside your and my labs! 👏👏👏
Humbled to be the guest editor together with R. Klein & D. Wilkinson of this SI @neurosciIBRO dedicated to the memory of Friedrerich Bonhoeffer. Thank you to all the colleagues who have kindly contributed with exceptional articles and to @D_dToro for the stunning cover picture!
A new Special Issue is out in Neuroscience @NeurosciIBRO honouring Friedrich Bonhoeffer (1932–2021). Read the Editorial by Rüdiger Klein @MPIforBI, David Wilkinson and Eloisa Herrera @LabEHerrerasciencedirect.com/science/ar… @ibroSecretariat @ELSneuroscience

IDEAL Research office is currently accepting applications for our paid Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program #PennPREP! Deadline is March 1, 2023 ✍️ To learn more about our program, feel free to reach out to us or visit: med.upenn.edu/idealresearch/…
IDEAL Research is excited to kick off #BlackExcellence at Penn series by featuring our fellow Maya Hale @MayaAHale. Maya (@UMBC '18) is a PhD cand. in @CAMBUpenn DSRB studying protein regulation in spinal cord development in @BashawLab. Maya shares her motivation in science
While we’re on the topic of outreach, we have an open outreach educator position for DrosoPHILA. Check it out and apply here: wd1.myworkdaysite.com/en-US/…
🚨 Our paper on our DrosoPHILA outreach program is out in #eNeuro (eneuro.org/content/early/202…)! Through DrosoPHILA, we work with Philly public high schools to enhance science literacy and engage students with STEM education. Here are key things we learned along the way 🧵:
5 - Making outreach part of your research program sends an important message to trainees about your commitment to promoting accessibility and diversity in science. Plus, trainees will have a chance to experience how outreach influences their own science identity!
Interested in implementing a similar curriculum in your lab? Reach out to us! In addition to detailing our program’s development in this paper, we are making our supporting materials available to all.
