How highway engineers use doctored and biased traffic forecasts to push for billions in wasteful, destructive highway expansion projects. Ben Ross and City Observatory's Joe Cortright expose the deception in Dissent. dissentmagazine.org/online_a…
Roadway expansions rely on bogus traffic models:
Highway agencies "predict worse traffic if the highway isn’t widened and better if it is, and [they] fend off criticism by obscuring the basis for these predictions in a fog of complexity."

Turns out traffic modeling used to justify expensive road projects can be pretty shady, thx @benrosstransit and @joe_cortwright for laying out a damning case here dissentmagazine.org/online_a…
Government highway agencies have enabled the blatant falsification of traffic model results. As a result, the United States wastes billions on road expansions that fail to cure congestion and make it harder to get around without a car.

The U.S. sets higher standards for those who want to join the country than to lead it. If Trump were an immigrant, here are 21 awkward questions he’d have to answer truthfully to get a green card or become a U.S. citizen. (Warning: very long thread.) 1/

Faced with the choice between zero emission buses and providing good service, Austin’s transit agency is choosing good service. Expect this debate in many US cities. Battery electric technology just does not seem to be delivering on range and reliability.
Capital Metro is slamming the brakes on the ambitious goal of transitioning to an all-electric bus fleet — a Project Connect promise — because of problems with the range and reliability of electric buses.

ALT Workers United and Starbucks share a commitment to developing a productive relationship in the best interests of Starbucks partners. During mediation discussions last week over ongoing brand and IP litigation, a constructive path forward emerged on the broader issues of the future of organizing and collective bargaining at Starbucks. To build on that path, Workers United and Starbucks have agreed to begin discussions on a foundational framework to achieve collective bargaining agreements for represented stores and partners, the resolution of litigation between the union and the company, including brand litigation, and a fair process for workers to organize. As a sign of good faith, Starbucks has agreed to provide workers represented by Workers United with credit card tipping and benefits announced by the company in May of 2022. While there is plenty of work ahead, coming together to develop this framework is a significant step forward and a clear demonstration of a shared commitment.
Gov. Moore's budget would slash bus & train service. The legislature can fix it.

It’s an honor for MDOT Sec Wiedefeld to mention his “initial investment” in Southern MD Rapid Transit (SMRT) in his new $43B capital program, but $1.25M in FY24 and $20M total—for planning only—is hardly a contributing factor to the 6-year $2B funding gap. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/…
“Today was a dark day for Israeli democracy. The push to topple democratic consensus in Israel by a right-wing, extreme government, must be challenged. "

Had lunch today at Post Pub. Having eaten there a few times in its glory days, I believe I'm the first person who ever went inside it in search of fresh air.

A "rapid disassembly" is what happened at Chernobyl. They didn't say "unscheduled" but it was most certainly unscheduled.
