I've always just assumed that 90% of people getting arts qualifications won't end up doing that as a career. the way it used to work is that the degree helps you get a corporate office job and you'll end up in marketing or something
For 3D students: Most I’ve met simply aren’t doing the hours needed to get into the industry. Studying only 10:00-16:00 every day won’t cut it - particularly since only a portion of the day is spent on actual work.

this is an awesome lil game design manifesto i still think making small games is best for learning your craft, and the article is a tad self-contradictory on that point. but otherwise great stuff
I really enjoyed reading this: illomens.itch.io/no-one-is-g… I am a long time deep on a project and I aim to one day sell it, but the reason I got to where I am in it is because for the longest time I completely ignored the idea of making something commercial, so I could just explore.

Here's a Chinese-room style thought experiment on AI as theft: Take two sealed rooms, one containing a human artist, one containing an AI model. You don't know which is which. You feed both rooms with the life works of Salvador Dali and ask them to learn the style. You then return a month later and ask both rooms to produce an image in the style of Dali. When these works are produced, is there an argument to be made that a crime of theft has been committed in one room, but not the other?
If Ai is theft, everything is theft.

looks like 100k wishlists is the new minimum for steam discoverability, better get marketing
Steam just made a change that's really gonna hurt future indie games. The Popular Upcoming page used to list games chronologically by release time. As long as you had enough wishlists to make the cut (~6k to 7k), you'd get some time at the top of the list for people to discover your game. Now it's listed algorithmically, with far more large games from major companies and publishers on the list, even those releasing two weeks away. The lowest wishlist count on there right now is 80k, when before it would've been 10 indie games as low as 6k wishlists. Feeling very lucky our game's early access release barely made it out before this changed. It was worth probably 1k wishlists for us, and we had some really unfortunate timing/positioning too. It can be worth thousands of wishlists and sales for smaller games. Steam is more heavily prioritizing larger games, with the budget and time to grow to enormous wishlist totals, or the rare indie viral hit. The small to mid-sized games just lost a way to find players. Steam players lost a tool to discover cool smaller games.

for some reason it's become acceptable for Kickstarter campaigns to miss their delivery dates by months/years. "Silksong and Mina were late, so it's okay for us too" I feel like a lot of backers wouldn't pledge if they knew the actual timelines
I've been burned by so many Kickstarters that take years to deliver their projects past their estimated delivery dates, and won't let me update my shipping address after moving 🫠 I love supporting artists and their passion projects but I think I'm just finally done w that site

the throwaway-idea mindset comes naturally after years of making things - when you learn that great ideas don't always lead to great things, and often half-baked ideas can turn into something wonderful. basically just "don't count your chickens"

Like the other person, i needed to hear this too. Might be asking for too much here but do you have any advice or tips of how to enter that "throwaway garbage" mindeset?

this problem goes away when you treat your ideas as throwaway garbage that exist only as a starting point for the creative process. when you fall in love with what's in your head, there's no incentive to make it real

and how can you ever hope to realise such a perfect vision? what if you don't have the skills, what if you mess it up? you've doomed yourself from the start
