"The idea that *real* recovery requires 'living a drug free life,' as SAMHSA's Dear Colleague letter puts it, is still pervasive," writes Helen Redmond. "Coercing patients to quit medications for opioid use disorder is not evidence-based." filtermag.org/samhsa-long-te…

New: Rajpattie Ramkellawan was found dead on Rikers Island this morning. She underwent a psychiatric evaluation on Friday while held on burglary charges. She’s the third person to die on Rikers this year so far — and the first without DOC press notifying reporters.

I also read it & highly recommend! About time this humiliating system is abolished.
In a few weeks I’m starting as a counselor at a methadone clinic. I read this in 1 sitting & am VERY glad I did. I highly recommend this for learning how & why this one medication has its own set of rules, and how these clinics function as a carceral arm of fed & state gov’ts.

Bernie Sanders: “We cannot continue to fund the extremist government of Netanyahu who has been waging a genocidal war in Gaza, who started the war in Iran, was violating all kinds of international law in the West Bank killing Palestinians. Is this really what we should continue spending billions of dollars on when we have so many problems at home?”

"God does not bless any conflict."
God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs. Military action will not create space for freedom or times of #Peace, which comes only from the patient promotion of coexistence and dialogue among peoples.

I’m saddened to learn that a New Yorker in city custody died early this morning. He was transferred from Rikers Island to Elmhurst Hospital yesterday evening, where he was receiving medical attention. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones as they endure this profound loss. Every person in our city’s care deserves dignity, safety, and access to quality medical treatment—without exception. Transparency is essential and the Department of Correction and oversight partners have begun an investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Q: Why do hospitals serve some of the most toxic, ultra-processed junk food imaginable? A: Because the system isn't built to cure illness. It's built to manage it... FOREVER. Who's ready to demand hospitals stop feeding disease & start feeding health? MAHA

Bringing goodness & light to the sick, disdained & forgotten.
Earlier this week, I broke fast at Rikers Island with New Yorkers in custody, Department of Correction staff, Commissioner Stanley Richards, and Councilmember Yusef Salaam. It was a night that will stay with me for quite some time. People sharing what little they have: breaking bread, offering prayer, making space for one another’s dignity even in the hardest place. In a system too often defined by what it takes, I was reminded of what it means to give—mercy, dignity, and humanity. May we extend that mercy as far as we can. Eid Mubarak to all.

Right on! There is no justification for these stigmatizing, dehumanizing methadone clinics. Give people a prescription & let them go to the pharmacy like everyone else!

Jerome Wright shares a picture of Theresa Grady’s husband, who was recently killed. They told her he died of a heart attack and yet he looked like this. With Theresa distraught in the background, Jerome says we must break this system.
