Now that my vacation has passed, I am excited to share some recently published work on using the @Apple #smartwatch to predict single-stride and stride-to-stride fluctuation parameters during #gait. @ABMEjournal rdcu.be/dhfTU

With only the IMU and machine learning (no personal details), we predicted single-stride parameters at 7-11% error and stride-to-stride fluctuation parameters at 18-22% error. Predictions were both consistent and sensitive relative to optoelectronic motion capture.

Further work is certainly needed to explore the breadth of different gait contexts, but we are very excited by the feasibility of the smartwatch approach to evaluate stride-to-stride fluctuations, a phenomenon linked to stability and fall risk, in real-world conditions.

The objections to the MyoSuite release seem mostly related to how it is presented, rather than the actual substance. This is an important, yet incremental, advance. Interactive graphic musculoskeletal surgery simulation has existed for more than 30 years! pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2210…
