The Center for Victims of Torture (CVT): Healing torture survivors globally, strengthening partners who heal, advocating for an end to #torture. RT≠Endorsement
Through sanctions and unlawful threats of military action, the Trump administration is deepening the humanitarian crisis in Cuba. At the same time, they are once again threatening to use the Guantanamo Base, a prison with a history of dehumanizing and abusing people, to detain Cuban immigrants.
I led 31 of my colleagues to demand an end to the Trump administration's unlawful plans in Cuba.

Close Guantanamo Joins 85 Other Organizations Opposing Plans to Hold Cuban Migrants at #Guantanamo - my new article, promoting a letter to Congress decrying a proposal to hold Cubans at Gitmo if they flee the US blockade closeguantanamo.org/Articles…
“If the Trump administration is worried about Cuban migration, the solution is simple: stop intentionally impoverishing the Cuban people through an embargo & fuel blockade,” said @michael_galant, senior research associate at @ceprdc, one of the groups that signed onto the letter.
On one side of Guantánamo Bay, U.S. soldiers face a temporary disruption in the availability of lattes. On the other side, Cubans sit in darkness, waiting for the power to come back on.

Currently, 15 men remain prisoners in #Guantanamo, detained in conditions described by a former UN special rapporteur as “ongoing cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment…and may also meet the legal threshold for #torture.”

"Until Guantánamo is closed, it will continue to rear its ugly head. Its very existence offers a ready-made loophole — a place designed to sit outside the law and public scrutiny." -- Yumna Rizvi

A threat to wipe out “a whole civilization” may amount to a threat of genocide. We urge all parties to respect international law. Those responsible for atrocities can and must be held accountable.

BREAKING: After weeks of organizing, we have reached the majority necessary to force a vote to extend Haiti TPS.
Thank you to our coalition and everyone fighting for this critical lifeline for the 350,000 Haitian nationals.
Our neighbors are so deserving.
I spent 4 years trying to get @CVTorg accreditation at the United Nations. At every NGO committee session we would be blocked by a State hostile to human rights. Other States need to end this bureaucratic censorship and exclusion.
Press release: together with 25 other UN Special Procedures, I am calling on States that champion human rights defenders to consider candidacy for the ECOSOC NGO Committee.
The Committee is key when it comes to civil society being able to access UN spaces, yet the majority of States seeking election to it actively repress human rights defenders in their own countries and there is already an alarming trend of States using the Committee to block human rights organisations.
States that support civil society must stand up and ensure the elections are contested.

Grateful for the frank and meaningful discussions with a wide range of stakeholders in Washington, DC over the past days. Human Rights bind us together. Looking forward to continuing and expanding these exchanges.

On March 8, we recognize International Women’s Day. This year and every year, CVT stands with the thousands of women around the world who are survivors of torture. In 2025, 72% of the clients we saw in our clinics outside the U.S. were women. After massive cuts to our U.S. funding, thousands more survivors are without care today. And with more than 117 million people forcibly displaced globally, care for survivors, and for all the women and girls among them, is needed more than ever.
