So far, African teams have been better counterweights to European teams than South American teams have.
Jarring how African teams are just automatically seen as giant underdogs. Senegal, Morocco, Ivory Coast getting results isn’t groundbreaking. They’re good teams

Here’s me playing the US national anthem at a minor league baseball game in Iowa in 2006 in my Ivory Coast jersey because I was obsessed with Didier Drogba and the team’s story.
There can’t be more than 11 people in the United States who knew what Côte d'Ivoire was before the World Cup.

we're days away from a "victor wembanyama shares all the same defects as my toxic ex-boyfriend" piece, the likes of which we haven't seen since the bernie sanders campaign.

Nothing but respect for KAT. All things considered I’m glad he’s going to have a ring in his career.
Karl-Anthony Towns when asked about Victor Wembanyama not being “friendly” during the Finals "He’s a once in a generation player that the league is honored to have." (h/t @MrBuckBuckNBA)

"Sorry, you can't play in the World Cup because Mark was crap at geography at school."
Shouldn't one of the requirements for a country to qualify to play in the World Cup that it be a country that people have heard of?

VOZINHA, the 40-year-old Cape Verde goalkeeper, was in tears after drawing against SPAIN. “I have waited and dreamed for this moment all my life”. There’s nothing like the World Cup. 🇨🇻❤️🥺

🤩 Vozinha, 40 years old, keeps a clean sheet against Spain in his World Cup debut with Cape Verde. History. 🇨🇻

Suddenly USMNT could have a real path to the Semifinals
That Spain draw was pretty consequential because if they finish second in Group H, they'll probably face *Argentina* in the Round of 32. Now, a 37% chance of that matchup happening.

If he can pull a similar result against Uruguay, he deserves the best GK award

And you could hear it in his broadcast. I understand he’s human and it’s hard to hide your bias, but as the series went on he made less and less effort to hide it

Hearing a bunch of podcasts talk about a large portion of sports fans turning on Victor Wembanyama. Look, as someone who’s watched every second of Mahomes for almost a decade, and the public fallout, this was inevitable. Someone that gifted takes a sport by storm and announces themselves as the new face of the league, modern society is gonna turn on that level of success every single time. It’s who we are. This is the era of haters. Misery loves company. We’re better at tearing down than we are at building up, unfortunately. This is especially true about the noise on social media. People are 10 times more likely to complain than give credit.
