As West Loop continues to grow, we need to be proactive about improving connectivity. Halsted BRT and some bus circulator routes would be (relatively) low effort but massively helpful in supporting office residential growth in the area.

FASCINATING study from Helsinki supporting the importance of FINE-GRAINED parcels for street-retail presence, agglomeration, and diversity. Basically, small parcels with high density are associated with healthy retail. Small parcels with low density, and large parcels of whatever density, are associated with weaker retail. Anyone who has walked around urban neighborhoods and paid attention to parcel size already knew this. Don't blame the death of commercial real estate on internet shopping or delivery services Blame superparcels and megaprojects.
People often wring their hands about brick&mortar retail in the US. But brick&mortar retail is FINE in the (vanishingly few) neighborhoods that are fine-grained, mixed-use, and sufficiently dense. Like Jackson Heights, Queens, America's only great courtyard block neighborhood, where there is a pharmacy on most blocks.

Improving frequency and reliability of the trains (and buses) needs to be a top priority for candidates in the upcoming municipal election. We cannot expect to meet housing or climate goals without a transit system that allows more Chicagoans to live car-free.
my feelings on the L range from “it’s such a miracle i get to ride across the city on an elevated train almost every day” to “this system is absolute TRASH” largely dependent on just how frequently the trains come and how many delays there are

Replying to @DanielKayHertz
Frequency is freedom—has anyone said that before

This was an excellent article today in the Chicago Tribune that illustrates the inevitable tragedy that occurs when both our transportation planning and criminal justice systems give far too much deference to drivers. chicagotribune.com/2026/06/1…

Chicago has something for everyone ❤️ Let's make sure that includes abundant housing for residents and lodging for visitors
By the way that Chicago Blues Festival last weekend was peak. Literally my first experience of the city. Came from the airport, dropped my bags & strolled through downtown on my own when I randomly saw this in Millennium Park. Thousands of people having a chill picnic in the grass listening to this lovely gentleman playing his music. Absolute vibes. That‘s when I knew I was gonna enjoy my time here 😅

We're excited to see The Loop transform into a truly mixed-use neighborhood! Cities should adapt to meet the needs of their residents, and our leaders need to plan ahead for changing demand, particularly when it comes to housing, transit, schools, and city services. Looking forward to supporting 2027 candidates who prioritize dense, transit-oriented growth 🏗️
Twenty-five office-to-residential conversion projects are underway in downtown Chicago as of June 2026 — more than the last 20 years combined. Valued at $1.8 billion, the 3,900 units are repurposing approximately 4 million square feet of underutilized commercial space.

Doesn’t matter how much enforcement and educational messaging there is. This will never be a safe way for cyclists and drivers to coexist. We need dedicated concrete infrastructure.
Maybe it’s time for Illinois to add a question about bikes getting doored to its driver’s license test, and maybe it’s time to add some signs on light poles around high bike transit areas reminding dumbass drivers to check their side mirrors for other traveling human beings

Far too long we've had leaders who disregard public transit as a societal catch all rather than treat it as vital infrastructure. Chicagoans, suburban commuters, and tourists who rely on transit all deserve better.
Taking the Blue Line home after a red eye from ORD and every car is full of people dealing with housing insecurity. This is not how you deal with homelessness. This is not the role of public transit. This is not how you introduce tourists to your city. @ChicagosMayor

It’s criminal that this 50-acre CHA site in Little Italy has sat vacant for 20 years while Chicago faces a housing crisis. An entire generation of Chicagoans missed out on opportunities for homeownership and rental housing, businesses missed out on customers, and the city missed out on millions in tax revenue. Twenty years of inaction is just unacceptable. @ChicagoDOH

New apartments are 76% electric-heated, and their residents drive less and use less land. Building more of them cuts carbon emissions by up to 14% in metro areas, while also lowering rents. Housing abundance and climate progress are the same investment.
