How do you get players to react immediately when possession changes? ⚽️
Lose it → defend.
Win it → attack.
Simple idea.
Hard habit.
Here's what I've found works 🧵
I was listening to Pep Ljinders on @ground_guru and wanted to explore one of his ideas further…
The players really enjoyed this practice, centred around verticality and rotations to break down a block.
I added some individual considerations to support further detail.

What's your favourite?
Talent without courage doesn't win games. ⚽️
Over 15 years of coaching, I've seen this again and again.
Many players have ability.
Far fewer have the courage to use it when it matters.
Here's what I mean 🧵

Possession Breakout Practice:
✅Topic: Breaking lines
💠Principle: Receive between lines
💠Time: 4 x 6 minutes
💠Area: 65 x 56 yards
💠Players: 15 outfields 1 GK
✅Set-Up
💠Team Blue: 9 players
💠Team Red: 6 players
💠Team Red starts in the possession area with 3 Blue players pressing, creating a 6v3.
✅How It Works:
💠Phase 1: Team Red completes 6 passes, then 3 Red players break forward to create a 3v2 and try to score.
💠Phase 2: After the attack ends, Team Blue builds out in a 9v6 and tries to score in the mini-goals.
✅Coaching Points
💠Receive between lines with an open body shape.
💠Play forward quickly when the opponent is disorganized.
💠Make sure the 3v2 ends with a shot.

Throughout my career I’ve had the privilege of delivering this masterclass to some of the best academies and federations in world football.
This season alone — Aston Villa. Brighton. Chicago Fire. Hong Kong Football Association. The Premier League Academy Coaches Conference at Old Trafford.
And throughout my career — Arsenal. Wolverhampton Wanderers. And many more.
Every room. Every conversation. The same reaction.
“This is the thing nobody taught us.”
The secret of individual development that conventional coaching courses just don’t teach you.
Now — for the first time — this presentation is available to every coach.

One thing I think many youth coaches underestimate:
The defensive work rate required to play at a higher level. ⚽️
Here's what I've seen over 15 years of coaching 🧵

Playing Out of the Back: Around, Through, or Over
Game Format:
8v7 game to help the blue team build out from the back against pressure. Then it moves 7v6 when Red is attacking. Blue full backs can't defend.
Set Up
Blue team plays with 8 players.
Red team presses with 7 players.
Ball starts from the blue goalkeeper.
Use zones to guide progress up the field.
Blue team tries to build and break the press.
Red team tries to win the ball and score quickly.
Objective
Blue team must choose the best solution:
Play Around: use wide players and switch the ball.
Play Through: find the midfielder between the lines.
Play Over: play into space behind the press.
Game Rules
Start every attack from the goalkeeper.
Blue team scores by playing into the target zone or finding the forward player.
Red team scores by winning the ball and finishing on goal.
If red wins it, they attack quickly.
Restart from the goalkeeper after a goal or ball out.
Coaching Points
Create angles to receive.
Open body shape before receiving.
Check shoulders early.
Move the ball quickly under pressure.
Do not force the pass through the middle.
Recognize when to play around, through, or over.
Goalkeeper supports behind the ball and helps switch play.
