With EU negotiating a new agreement with Mexico, it is vital that the U.S. secure real common names commitments in the upcoming #USMCA Review. Renaming confuses consumers and relabeling negatively impacts sales. Thank you to @USTradeRep for standing up for America’s farmers.

American producers could face re-labeling and re-branding of their cheese, meat, beer, and wines in Mexico, unless we strengthen and renew #USMCA. At CCFN, we are fighting do just that and ensure that Mexico fully commits to protect common names.

The EU's geographical indication policies have long been used to block American cheeses, meats, wines & other products from global markets.

Thankful to see @USTradeRep's 2026 Special 301 Report shine a light on this, and the work they're doing to push back and open markets for American producers. Adding the EU to the Watch List is a meaningful step. American producers deserve a fair shot. ustr.gov/about/policy-office…

With July’s #USMCA Review fast approaching, CCFN is continuing to press for changes to ensure Mexico protects the use of common names. US producers deserve to sell to our southern neighbor without unfair restrictions. Thank you @USTradeRep for standing up for America’s farmers.

Common names matter. Leading up to USMCA’s renewal in July, we’ll continue to advocate for changes that ensure Mexico upholds its commitments to protect common names in its market. Our farmers deserve a #USMCA that delivers for them.

Yesterday, CCFN & allies sent a letter to @USTradeRep Amb Greer applauding the Administration's leadership in protecting common food & beverage names worldwide. The EU has spent years trying to claim generic terms. USG is now setting the record straight. files.constantcontact.com/2a…

We commend Chairman @CongressmanGT & the House Ag Committee for advancing a bipartisan #FarmBill that includes the SAFETY Act — protecting US exporters' rights to use common food names like parmesan, bologna & chateau worldwide. Time to move this commonsense policy into law.

Over the next several months, CCFN will fight to strengthen and renew #USMCA – particularly Mexico’s implementation of common name protections. Thank you to @USTradeRep for prioritizing this critical issue for American producers!

CCFN’s Shawna Morris testified today at @USTradeRep on a breakthrough year for common names. We're grateful for this results-focused agenda countering EU overreach & protecting American farmers' market access. Time to build on this momentum!

“Argentina’s commitment to protect 39 common cheese names and 10 generic meat terms could not have come at a more important time." Thank you to @USTradeRep and the USTR negotiating team for their leadership in protecting U.S. exporters’ rights! commonfoodnames.com/u-s-dair…

Ironically, this is perhaps the most evident in Europe. The EU enjoys relatively open access to the US while blocking the import of common name products like “parmesan” and “bologna.” If the EU wants “fair and balanced” trade rules, it can start by implementing them at home.

Thank you to @DepSecVaden for highlighting at today's @Nataglaw Center webinar the EU’s ongoing misuse of geographical indications and the importance of addressing these challenges through ongoing #trade negotiations. A vital issue for U.S. agriculture.

As the European Union seeks to conclude its trade deal with Mexico in the near future, we strongly support Amb. Greer’s remarks to Congress this week for the need to ensure Mexico fully implements its USMCA commitments on common names in the 2026 USMCA Review.

CCFN congratulates Julie Callahan on her confirmation as @USTradeRep Chief Ag Negotiator. As US producers continue to face growing threats from EU efforts to confiscate common names, Dr. Callahan is the right leader to defend American producers and expand export opportunities.

“These agreements send a powerful message,” says CCFN’s Jaime Castaneda. The US is standing up to EU attempts to monopolize common food terms. As Swiss tariff relief is considered, we urge the administration to secure US dairy access and firm common name protections first.
