This, but for everyone. There should be an emergency line that specifically does not call police.

Replying to @NoLore
There should be a list of cop haters. They would be unable to call 911.

With the greatest single-year increase in child poverty in N.S., @FranklyLess concludes: “what did we learn? That child poverty can be tackled, but our elected officials have chosen not to persist.” @CCPANS @fedfamilylab @AcadiaU
Today our @fedfamilylab at @AcadiaU released the 2023 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty with @CCPANS. The highest single-year increase since the year the promise was made to eradicate child poverty in 1989. There are now 35,330 children living in low-income families.

The Mounted Unit alone has a proposed budget of $5,952,600. The 22 city-funded agencies that operate daytime drop-ins, which are used by thousands of homeless people and provide hot meals, have been allocated <$5 million. 32 drop-ins, including mine, have no city funding at all.
Mounted officers on horseback have the advantage of an elevated view, making it easier to identify suspicious activity in crowded areas. In 2023, they appeared in over 1500 events, including searches, demonstrations, and radio calls. #SupportYourTPS

Now imagine if we had a massive team of mental health and addiction professionals handling these. While I appreciate other areas need spending, imagine if we took 500M of the police budget and devoted it to professionals and supports to prevent these calls in the first place.
A Stats Canada report estimated that up to 80% of police responses to calls were related to issues of mental health, drug overdose, suicide, domestic dispute/domestic violence & other ‘non-criminal’ offences. If police are not trained to handle these issues, why are they sent?

The #Barrie police budget in 2014 was $46.4M. That's a $21M (45%) increase to the police in 10 years, nearly double what it would have gone up had they kept strictly to inflation. Why are the police allowed to bloat while other services like the library are forced to stay slim?
