Another atmospheric event that can be related to Sporadic Es development. Could be worthy to keep an eye out tomorrow for cloud development in the Midwest! They can be a visual representation that the drivers that bring Sporadic Es are working. “Noctilucent clouds (NLCs) and Sporadic E (Es) are fundamentally linked by their shared dependence on meteors and mesospheric dynamics. While one is an ice-crystal phenomenon at 80 km altitude, and the other is a layer of ionized metal in the ionosphere, they frequently overlap in their formation drivers and seasonal presence.” #fmdx #SporadicEs
NOCTILUCENT CLOUDS HAPPENING NOW NORTHERN ILLINOIS!!! VERY RARE

NEW PODCAST DROP: The DX Central "From the Static" Podcast, Episode 31: a look back at the Sporadic Es data for North American FM DX for the month of May. podbean.com/eas/pb-qr8tv-1ae… This was recorded on June 5 before the ionosphere decided to go haywire. In addition to my May analysis here, be sure to catch the July 2026 edition of The Spectrum Monitor magazine for my article at the halfway point of the Es season. thespectrummonitor.com/ #fmdx @DXTVFM @w2njl

Interesting. There is a theory that red sprites like these can aid in Sporadic Es ionization since these occur at much higher elevations close to or within the mesosphere. #fmdx @DXTVFM @w2njl
Red sprites from last night. Last night was crazy. I captured over 60 individual sprite events. Captured from southern Minnesota looking toward the storm over Missouri / Illinois.

New state logged by e-skip, 88.7 WRVT Rutland, VT at 470 miles! Also logged was 103.1 WZKC Royalton, VT at 506 miles with RDS. Today was a crazy DX day. I’ll have a lot of recordings to review.

The data analysis of today’s sporadic Es event(s) is going to be a real treat. I am already starting preliminary review and the numbers are staggering. The first 10 days of June have been fantastic but the last three in particular have been historic. @DXTVFM @w2njl #fmdx #SporadicEs #VHF #DX #fmradio

LIFETIME FIRST!!! 162.450 MHz - WWG88 in Crandon, WI - 1053 miles via Sporadic Es. @NWSGreenBay WFO heard in Mandeville, LA. The ionosphere is certainly "on one" today. Never experienced 162 MHz Sporadic Es and I have been doing FM/VHF DX since 1995. #NOAAWeatherRadio @NOAA @DXTVFM @w2njl

I have no idea what will happen the rest of this Es season, but FM DXers will be talking about the first 10 days of June 2026 for years and years to come. #fmdx @DXTVFM @w2njl

Okay, #FMDX twitter folks. I saw something today during the peak of the Es opening I have never seen. In this video....below band there was some sort of......something. It was undulating, at times appeared very strong (peaking in yellow). It wasn't noise, at least not local, as it only showed during the peak of the opening. What on Earth is that? @DXTVFM @FMDXIreland @w2njl

I am tuned here in the video to 87.7 where I was receiving a station (probably WMTO in Norfolk, based on the paths at the time). But you can actually see the narrow trace of signal peaks from them on the bottom of the waterfall. These undulating blobs were peaking at similar times. Is this video?

Yesterday's E-skip was incredibly strong at times. Here is 102.1 KDGE from Dallas-Fort Worth at 1,028 miles, completely overriding my local 102.1 WDOK, which is only 23 miles from me. You can hear the top of the hour IDs swapping back and forth. There were tons of strong signals from Texas all over the band.

E-skip season is underway, and finally, there's a new episode of the VHF DX Podcast to talk about what's to come! Bryce and I reflected on a long, hard winter and I share some industry insight and a couple of equipment additions I've added to the shack. open.spotify.com/episode/5q1…

Direct Hit! The solar storm launched during the M9.3-flare is indeed Earth-directed! Since this is the second significant eruption from Region 4455 while in the Earth-strike zone, this means this second storm could get "held up" in "traffic" on its way to Earth. The NASA solar storm prediction shows the second storm arrival by late June 4. However, the first storm will precede this so expect some impact starting around mid-day June 4 with the stronger storm arriving close behind!
