I say this not for me — I’m happily under contract with MPR through the end of the year — but in general: organizations sitting on lots of data should be hiring people with data journalism skills to communicate their data to the public.

Finally finished Season 4 of #TheExpanse. So good. Really redolent of peak BSG, except with more actual science.

Just gave opening remarks for #DCEthicsBowl - asked students to consider: 1. If smart good people made ethical mistakes in past, what mistakes might you be making? 2. What evidence would prove you *wrong*? 3. If you haven't changed your mind lately, how do you know it's working?

Oh wow. I love the Southwest Journal and have appreciated Dylan’s work for years. It is reliably great reporting despite the paper’s small size. A smart local media person would scoop Dylan up immediately. Hoping the paper isn’t heading in the wrong direction.
Wasn't planning to do this today, but ... some personal news: My last day at the Southwest Journal is March 6. Not sure what comes next.

P.S. Don’t worry! This lil buddy isn’t dead. To survive extreme low temps, its body has made some adaptations, like sugars that act like antifreeze, and processes for keeping ice outside their cells to protect their tissues. scifri.me/rk1

If it was dumb newspaper publishers not adapting...were all 1,000-plus American local daily newspaper publishers just equally dumb? Why did NONE of them adapt successfully? Why have approx ZERO digital local news sites arisen with more journalists than daily papers used to have?

And here's the arguably the biggest proposal in @JohnCarneyDE's #desots: He wants to raise the minimum age at which someone in #netDe can purchase cigarettes from 18 to 21. California recently did the same. Read more about that effort here: bit.ly/2TUVKCb

Huh. Call me old-fashioned. But I would have thought that the point of a festival of ideas was to expose the audience to ideas. If you only invite your friends over, it’s called a dinner party.
