John McDonnell's argument falls apart the moment you look at what Palestine Action actually did. This wasn't ordinary protest. This wasn't people holding signs outside Parliament. This was a movement whose members repeatedly engaged in break-ins, criminal damage, sabotage, intimidation, and attacks on facilities, causing millions of pounds in losses.
The age of some supporters is completely irrelevant. A pensioner committing a criminal offense does not magically transform it into peaceful activism. What really brings the law into disrepute is the idea that criminal acts should be excused because the perpetrators claim a political cause. The rule of law cannot operate on the principle that vandalism, violence, and destruction become acceptable when directed at targets some politicians dislike.
McDonnell wants the public to see activists. The courts saw offenders. That's why they were convicted.
