I see the LA Mayor's race as a little bit like Lance Armstrong: 'Wow, he sure is winning a lot of races. Do you think he's cheating with steroids? He says no! There's no way to prove it. And there are all these cycle experts lined up to say "He just trains harder." Guess we'll never know!' Elections shouldn't be like that.

Anyone who doesn't understand why 2 is a problem in a racially diverse society is either lying, disingenuous, or really really stupid.
There are two things the education system should do: 1) make sure all kids have a baseline education that opens their minds and prepares them to function in the world 2) foster genius I have no idea why so many people think (2) is a bad thing.

We have solid standardized tests for all the core high school classes. There’s no need for subjective measures.
This is a brilliant idea: "A student’s transcript would show two overall grade-point averages. Next to the traditional GPA will appear a second number that adjusts course grades based on the median grade in each class. A student who earns an A in a course where the median grade is also an A would receive less of a boost than one who earns an A in a tougher course. If a student filled his schedule with easy-A classes, his transcript might show a traditional GPA of 4.0 and an adjusted GPA of 2.7. This large difference communicates that the student’s traditional GPA overstates his academic performance."

This is a total waste of time and doesn't take into account the fact that some schools have an average IQ of 115, others of 90. No, do away with grades entirely.

Someone in a position to know told me that Obama might have gotten in as a white male, toward the low end of the “qualified range” for non-protected groups. That would be consistent with the 94th pctile on the LSAT (few white males below the 94th get in, I bet).
I know Steve thinks Obama got a stratospherically high LSAT score, but I'm very skeptical. If he had, he would have also gotten a really high SAT verbal score, and he'd gotten that, he would have done much better than a scholarship to Occidental.

This is hilarious.
Just to highlight this: Nine-year-old boys averaged their highest-ever score on NAEP's long-term reading exam in 2025 (though not significantly higher than in 2020); nine-year-old girls are still stuck below their pre-COVID average

It's weird how ignorant pundits still are, more than a decade after the Bruce Jenner whoop-tee-doo, about the true nature of autogynephiles.

Thanks for your critique, Janet. We actually tried a couple of episodes where House (Hugh Laurie) (please put the brackets in the right place) gets it right first time, but they were only 6 minutes long. NBC weren’t happy. Then we tried some where House never gets it right and the patient dies. The audience wasn’t happy. One could apply your trenchant analysis to other art forms: JS Bach wrote 30 Goldberg variations on the same chord structure; Frida Kahlo painted 50 portraits of herself; Henry Moore, what?? The point is, or was, variations on a theme; if all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn’t meant for you. Nonetheless, I look forward to your first novel!

Always fun to read people who a dozen years ago would confidently criticize all those who didn't buy into ed tech writing mea culpas and confidently criticizing all those who don't share their doom and gloom about ed tech.
... and in my particular case, I did not think enough about what that meant in the classroom as that was happening. More thoughts on that here: itsalearningcurve.education/…

I would appreciate it even more if the company invested in some basic automation that didn’t require such unsustainable work.
Please appreciate the people who work hard to bring delicious food to our tables

Seems like a big potential opening for "harvesting" fraud--not manufacturing ballots for your guy but losing the ballots for the other guy: "If a voter trusts a stranger with their ballot, there is no recourse if that ballot doesn’t show up at the elections office. And there is no way to charge that harvester criminally, since no one knows who they are." redstate.com/jenvanlaar/2022…

For whatever reason, unlike ice cream, frozen yogurt is cyclical. But while it does go in and out of fashion, it doesn’t go backwards. The current craze is different from the Pinkberry era, which was different from the TCBY era. Lesson in that.

I dunno about this, but of Goodfellas, Casino, and Wolf of Wall Street, Casino is the only one I can watch through without getting bored or annoyed.
As a younger man I thought Casino was a weaker dupe of Goodfellas, but it's not. It's the counterpoint, the coda. Goodfellas is a celebration of outlaw ethos with a spectacular Hand of God crash in the last act. Casino is the Catholic God passing judgement within the first minute as Rothstein's car explodes, sending him to Hell. There are no carnal pleasures in Casino. Hands are hammered from the get go. Eyes explode. The mob's old and ugly. Don Rickles is the sex. Ace Rothstein's rise is morose and clouded in complications. Henry Hill had dates in spectacular oners through the back of fabulous clubs. Ace Rothstien is arguing over the number of blueberries in a muffin. It's the difference between watching a movie about a gangster versus one about an accountant. The gangster gets the looksmatch wife in Karen. The accountant shoots above his rightful league and gets Sharon Fucking Stone in her prime. We watch the courtship like a trainwreck because God does not allow men like Ace Rothstein have women like that, and the movie takes God's side. Goodfellas is a young man's movie about getting high and getting laid and getting caught before you know it. Casino doesn't give you any of the fun part because its message isn't crime doesn't pay, it's life doesn't pay. It's the final lesson the middle aged man knows but ignores as he puts on his pants everyday: the house always wins and the house hates you.

Things #Teachers don’t talk about: You spend the first month teaching people how to exist in your classroom before you can even touch the curriculum.

1938 "In spite of its vast expense, public education in the United States today is in many ways appallingly weak and ineffective. Age for age, the average pupil in our elementary school does not know as much about fundamentals as do pupils of other countries." Sound familiar? 🧵

Notice how "high school graduate" has morphed into a mandate for "college ready".
Deploying a 95% graduation rate to defend a 38.4% college-readiness rate is the ultimate Jedi mind trick in K-12 administration.
