We need a cultural transformation and to push back against the shameful language that demands we justify our desire for privacy. "What have you got to hide" needs to be replaced with "What do I choose to share"

Replying to @toggl
@toggl please can you revert the latest unnecessary changes to timer view? Now if I want to continue a task I started last week I have to change the date filter to find it, rather than simply clicking the start button on it as was previously possible - extra work for no benefit!

Your web app worked wonderfully 10 years ago when I first started using it but after numerous needless UI updates it now takes so much longer to perform the same simple tasks. A classic example of business objectives overriding user objectives.

As computers have become more powerful, we've somewhat forgotten how to use them efficiently. Instead, we often choose to rely upon raw power for performance. Imagine how many every day resources could be saved if we routinely used the same ingenuity as the authors of Unix Spell:
How do you fit a 250kB dictionary in 64kB of RAM and do lookups? For reference, even gzip -9 cannot compress this file beyond 85kB. In the 1970s, Douglas McIlroy at AT&T had the same challenge when implementing the spell checker for Unix. Instead of relying on generic compression techniques, he analyzed the distribution of the data and came up with a compression algorithm which was just 0.03 bits away from the theoretical limit of possible compression. To this day, it remains unbeaten. The story of how he designed this dictionary lookup from the ground up is a lesson in software engineering. How you consider the resource constraints in front of you and design your solution to run within them. In my latest article I take you through each step of the design of this ingenious algorithm right from the scratch. (Check replies for the link)

If I ever launched a stock photography repository I'd definitely call it 'Gravy'.

Still too early to think about Christmas songs but this is too good to resist:

Traffic is a vanity metric for digital marketing beginners. The veteran that focuses on conversions can beat a 300k traffic per month website with a 30k one. Likewise, a 30k Youtube channel with a proper offer and funnel can smoke a 300k one.

Huge heads-up! The manual actions for 'Site reputation abuse' have already started going out based on the policy update. Jason Kilgore first pinged me on LinkedIn that Forbes Advisor is not ranking for what it once was (not even for the query 'Forbes Advisor')... and it looks like the directory has been deindexed. Then I checked CNN Underscored. Same deal. And then WSJ Buyside. Same deal. Here is one of the manual actions just applied for a site impacted (not one mentioned above). So yes, Google has moved quickly with applying manual actions based on the new policy. Stay tuned.

When every single result above the fold is an ad for something you didn't search for... How can they pretend this is a good experience?

“We’re using AI to scale content” Oh, so you’re mass producing the exact same stuff everybody else is? Cool - that should set you apart.

Been cursing this under my breath for many years...
Dear WordPress plugin developers. Stop loading your assets on every single page. It is not necessary, slows down sites and isn't helping our reputation for speed.

I distilled my 4 years of marketing lessons into minimalistic visuals. 1. Sell Benefits. Not features.

I'm very excited to be working with @EqualizeDigital - @heyamberhinds @mr_chrishinds - on a full accessibility audit of the frontend of @WooCommerce. 🙌🏻 They've already completed the initial audit and the team at @10up are working through fixing any issues which arose.

Of all the opinions I've read about the current WP Drama, this resonates the most. Sometimes you can make the biggest impact by saying nothing at all.
A lot of people have reached out to me privately asking why I haven't been more vocal about the latest happenings with WordPress. There are several reasons, but here are the most relevant: 1) All of the activity surrounding WordPress has created a huge amount of extra work for our team. I've been focused on making sure SiteCare clients are protected and that the impacts from the changes are minimal for the people who trust us as stewards of their websites. 2) I've found over time that being reactionary will cause more damage than good. I've been watching everything closely, and I have opinions (strong ones), but I don't see how they enhance the conversation or get us any close to a resolution with the current trajectory or parties involved. 3) It all bums me out way too much to spend extra brain and heart cycles on it. I hate that everyone is losing right now. Literally no one in this mess is better off now than they were three weeks ago. And it all keeps devolving. I have to keep some distance for self-preservation sake. So yeah, I've been quiet, but I haven't been idle. Know that I'm here to support however I can, but not from out front right now. Send me a private message and I'll be more than happy to do what I can. ❤️❤️❤️

I posted something similar a while ago, I think there’s a lot of demand for this. Google could also throw small publishers a bone after all the devastation they’ve caused, by creating something like a SERP feature or a filter for small publishers. But yeah, I know, they won’t.
Someone with experience in search should create an Etsy-style search engine that only ranks small publishers, independent creators, local news, and small e-commerce sites... #seo #antitrust #smallbusiness #vcs #entrepreneurs #startups #google #bing #duckduckgo #ahrefs

As a developer who has worked with WordPress for almost 15 years now, I'm saddened to see what is happening within the community right now. I would back this:
13 Oct 2024
While I love WordPress, I sadly no longer trust it as a CMS. Here's what I would love to see happen: • The top companies (@wpengine, @elemntor, @bluehost, etc, etc) fork WordPress and pledge financial support for an entirely new foundation • Importantly, governance should be truly independent. Voting rights could be earned by developer hours or plugin contributions, but no single person or company could any longer make unilateral decisions • @Cloudflare could donate capacity to this new entity If setup correctly, we could have a true community-driven non-profit supported by *distributed* for-profit enterprises, and create a cherished web resource not unlike the Internet Archive or Wikipedia Foundation. I would support this open source CMS until my last breath

I can’t find anything online anymore. I don’t want AI summarizing things because it’s not reliable. I don’t want snippets because I want to see the rest of the content to know if it’s a spammer/scraper or trustworthy. I don’t want stuff with ratings because I don’t trust they’re legit. I. Want. To. See. The. Internet. Why is that so damn hard now?
Organic results are so deep my finger cramped as I scrolled (and scrolled and scrolled ) through the AI Organized Restaurant results.
