Eritrean Refugees in Libya: A Crisis the World Must Not Ignore 🚨
Thousands of Eritrean refugees in Libya continue to face a devastating humanitarian crisis marked by arbitrary arrests, detention, abuse, trafficking, and severe human rights violations. After fleeing repression, indefinite military conscription, imprisonment, and a lack of freedom in Eritrea, many hoped to find safety only to face new suffering in Libya.
Today, Eritrean refugees, including women and children, live in constant fear. Many are detained without legal protection, exposed to violence and exploitation, and denied basic humanitarian assistance such as food, healthcare, and shelter. Human rights organisations and UN reports continue to document torture, forced labour, sexual violence, and inhumane detention conditions faced by refugees and migrants in Libya.
For many Eritreans, the journey across the Mediterranean has become a desperate escape from unbearable conditions. Countless lives have already been lost in search of safety, dignity, and freedom.
This is not simply a migration issue.
It is a humanitarian crisis.A human rights crisis.A test of global conscience.
We call upon the United Nations (UN), UNHCR, the UN Human Rights Council, the African Union, the European Union, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and all humanitarian organisations to urgently intervene and protect Eritrean refugees in Libya.
Immediate action is needed to:
End arbitrary detention and abuse
Provide humanitarian and medical assistance. Ensure legal protection for refugees Investigate human rights violations
Create safe evacuation and resettlement pathways. Refugees are not criminals. They are human beings seeking protection, safety, and the fundamental right to live in dignity. The suffering of Eritrean refugees in Libya must not be ignored. Their voices deserve to be heard, and their rights must be protected under international humanitarian and refugee law.
