For the first time, five African American surgeons now lead the Trauma Service at the preeminent Johns Hopkins Hospital. This milestone, recognized during Black History Month, proves generations of determination behind every title. Linsey Davis reports. abcnews.go.com/

Donald Trump had the racist, bigoted audacity to post an AI-generated video depicting former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes. Most of us already know who Donald Trump is. We already know there are no bounds to how low he’s willing to go. We know that he has no moral compass. We know that he is a disgrace. So while his behavior is not shocking, it is certainly disgusting and disturbing. But when will it be enough for those who continue to stand beside him? When will Republicans in Congress condemn his behavior? Your silence is complicity — and it is very loud.
Last night, Trump posted a video to his social media platform that contained a racist clip showing Barack and Michelle Obama as monkeys. It's still up:

New on The Academic Surgeon! In Digging for Gold in the Cornfields, Dr. Hassan Aziz and colleagues share how they built a surgical outcomes research program at the University of Iowa—starting with nothing but curiosity, a faculty mentor, and a few committed trainees. This post is a must-read for anyone looking to start (or scale) academic research in surgery, especially with limited resources. 📖 Read here: aasurg.org/digging-for-gold-…

Today, I was joined by organizations representing 100,000 doctors & medical experts. They know — I know — that vaccines work, and have saved millions of lives. We cannot allow Sec. Kennedy or anyone else to undermine faith in science and put the health of our children at risk.

The Supreme Court’s freeze of nearly $800M in NIH grants is devastating - threatening HIV, suicide prevention, women’s health & equity-focused care. Labs may close. Trials may end. Communities will suffer. We must protect equity-centered science. nytimes.com/2025/08/21/us/po…

Independence Day is a reminder that America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We The People.’ ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ‘Yes We Can.’ America is owned by no one. It belongs to all citizens. And at this moment in history—when core democratic principles seem to be continuously under attack, when too many people around the world have become cynical and disengaged—now is precisely the time to ask ourselves tough questions about how we can build our democracies and make them work in meaningful and practical ways for ordinary people.
