If you want to know what it’s like to be a urologist, I was going to replace a man’s clogged catheter for the fourth time and as I whipped back the curtain he immediately says “Ah, Dr Bowman… my friend and my foe”

In the early 1920's, aspiring neurosurgeon Frederic Foley is discouraged by Harvey Cushing's input and diverts into urology. In 1929 he described the first version of what became the Foley catheter. He fails to patent it, and the patent is later taken by the Davol Company.
