I'm on the West Coast for a few days and have never seen this level of homelessness & open drug use in my life. And I'm not some suburb dweller afraid of cities, I have lived in major cities on the East Coast & Midwest for most of my adult life. It is disturbing & heartbreaking.

Soviet-style sports apparatus is good at delivering Olympic golds in individual disciplines but unsuited to team sports, which nee decentralised grassroots ecosystems and a youth talent pipeline through academies. So: 30,000 U-12 players vs 300,000 in Japan (at 11x population).
Why isn’t China better at soccer

Between 1949 and 1961, when the Berlin Wall went up, up to 2.7 million people fled the GDR For context, in 1950 it had an official population of 18.3 million and would have only 16 million four decades later in 1990

About 3% of North Korea's GDP came from the Korean residents in Japan in the 90s. North Korea extorted money from them, threatening with harm towards their family members residing in North Korea (around one in three Koreans in Japan had relatives in the DPRK). Money mostly came from the pachinko parlors in Japan, most of which were owned by ethnic Koreans.

When I was growing up the big five demo groups of New York were Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Blacks, Jews, and Italians. The updated list for today would be Chinese, Muslims, White transplants, Blacks and Jews.
A significant, significant development: "New York City's Chinese population has surpassed the Dominican population in size, making it the largest immigrant group in the five boroughs for the first time." gothamist.com/news/chinese-i…

Did I just hear correctly that Morocco’s team only has one player born in Morocco?
Community note
Morocco's 2026 World Cup squad has 7 players born in Morocco out of 26, not 1. compas.ox.ac.uk/article/pride-…

I can’t lie… the food in America is ridiculous. Everyone talks about portion sizes but nobody talks enough about how GOOD everything tastes. Even the “quick” food feels elite compared to what I’m used to in the UK.

Brazil plays Morocco today, so here's the map of Brazilian (green) v. Moroccan (orange) descent by state. Overall, 567K Brazilians compared to 153K Moroccans in the US.

It’s quite remarkable that the average young person on the street is a spiritual non-religious theist who believes that morality is subjective, while the average academic philosopher is a physicalist atheist who believes that morality is objective.
Over 90% of all Americans believe that people have a soul or spirit in addition to their physical bodies. The groups that buck this trend Jews: 75% Agnostics: 69% Atheists: 33%

At current rates of first births per women 15-44 (TMR), less than half of Black women in the US will have children. Meanwhile the Hispanic TMR has remained stable while Asians have fallen from near universal maternity to the same as the NH white rate.

there’s this really weird trend lately of trying to categorize Pakistan as part of the Middle East instead of South Asia (despite being one of the main constituents of the Indian Subcontinent) and I Do Not Get It
The poorest economies in the world are not achieving economic growth. The consequence is that progress against the very worst poverty is coming to a halt. This is one of the worst problems in the world today, but hardly gets any attention.

Time it would take for various countries to reach Italy's per capita income, assuming they continue at the same average yearly growth rate as they had over the past 30 years:

Never mind the political economy of it, I just find the colours used on these bar charts a bit offensive.
The world today is characterized by large-scale inequalities. And a climate crisis is looming over us. We urgently need a new vision for global progress in the 21st Century. One that grounds human development and equality in planetary habitability. What would it take to achieve high prosperity and equality while remaining within planetary boundaries? The World Inequality Lab is very excited to launch the #GlobalJusticeReport. [1/7]

Brazil produces world-class footballers by the hundreds — but mostly because it's a giant. Strip out size and the real overachiever is tiny Uruguay: under 4 million people, more football greatness per capita than anywhere on Earth. The new issue of The Atlas is out: why is South America so exceptionally good at men’s football?

one revolutionary aspect of TikTok is that it enabled long-distance cultural formation and exchange without written text for the first time, and this is more meaningful in China than in the West
Replying to @sharghzadeh
The problem is that Chinese characters are just a terrible writing system. It's very similar to hieroglyphics, it was revolutionary when it came out but at this point the lift for an adult learner of 3000 hanzi is too much for people with jobs. The grammar by comparison is simple
