Thousands of protesters breach police barricades in the Philippines as they march on the US Embassy in Manila to condemn US military presence in their country. The protesters demand that all US troops be kicked out and oppose the expansion of US military bases in their country.

On this day in 1954, the US backed a coup against Jacobo Árbenz, the progressive, democratically elected leader of Guatemala, because he sought to restore land to small farmers and Indigenous communities that had been dispossessed by US fruit companies.

Good scoop, another name jumping into the @UN Secretary-General race.
Guyana’s ambassador to the UN Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett is running for UN Secretary General. She’ll be officially nominated by Guyana. Recently Guyana was on the Security Council and Rodrigues-Birkett gained much attention for her strong speeches and principled stand.

BREAKING: ABC News Just Published Some Pretty Stunning ICE Data. The administration says it is targeting the "worst of the worst." But according to ABC's analysis of government data, only 3% of the more than 400,000 people detained by ICE between January 2025 and March 2026 had a violent felony conviction in the United States. ABC reports that ICE apprehended more than 4,800 U.S. citizens and deported over 2,000 of them during the first eight months of 2025.

The US government's illegal sanctions against Cuba are killing children, warned the UN human rights chief. The UN human rights office said US sanctions have caused “widespread harm” in Cuba: -infant mortality has doubled; -childhood cancer survival rates have fallen significantly; -only 30% of essential medicines are available; -fuel shortages have caused food production to decline by 60%. This is a barbaric, medieval-style blockade. news.un.org/en/story/2026/06…

New: Venezuelan opposition leader @leopoldolopez tells me the government of Delcy Rodriguez recently raided and destroyed his home: “After I supported the deployment of the U.S. Navy to remove Maduro…they went into my house - the only property I have in Venezuela - and they stole absolutely everything. This is the house where I spent a year and a half in house arrest after spending four years in solitary confinement. It's the house where my kids grew up and they stole everything. They tore the house down completely, and they killed the dogs.”

Mark this moment. This is where the endgame begins—though it might take two years to play out. A President of the United States is openly linking the *Pentagon* and rigging elections for his party. He is framing an authoritarian takeover as something the *U.S. military* wants.

Israeli historian @bartov_omer speaking on prime-time TV in Italy: “[Israel is] a country that is unwilling to face the truth, and that brings us to the issue of genocide... When genocide occurs, the entire society of the country perpetrating it becomes complicit in that genocide. Therefore, we must ask ourselves: in the case of Israel, where there is a conscript army made up of the sons and daughters of most Israeli citizens, what does it mean for a country to be involved in these activities? It means that everyone becomes part of this event: those who carry it out, those who deny it, and those who do nothing to stop it... In the case of Israel, this is a country going through a profound phase of denial... When people say that criticism of Israel, criticism of Zionism, or even the rejection of Zionism is antisemitism, frankly, that is nonsense. It concerns the rejection of a specific ideology that is no longer sustainable.” (Via @fattoquotidiano) :::

For anyone interested in China’s economic development, local governance, and the electric vehicle supply chain, I highly recommend following Fengming. His timely and in-depth analysis consistently provides valuable insights into the forces shaping China’s economy and EV industry,
Why did private firms, not state-owned enterprises (SOEs), come to dominate China’s EV sector? My new @ChinaJournal article (co-authored with Xiao Ma @maxiaoalex) challenge the "top-down industrial policy" narrative. The real engine? Strategic alliances between local governments and private capital. 🧵 Based on 3 years of fieldwork, 60 interviews (with officials, entrepreneurs, and engineers), and rich first-hand accounts, we show how strict central regulations inadvertently drove local states to bet big on private EV players. Here is the story: (1/15)
