The major media and the politicians they platformed were more or less unanimous about the need for austerity, and the benefits it would bring. A clear out of the people who were - demonstrably, and disastrously - wrong would be the functional equivalent of a revolution.
Everybody was told in 2010-15 that austerity was painful but necessary to improve living standards. And then no improvements came, ever.
