ALT This abrupt and sweeping action has driven global stock market prices down and thrown U.S. allies into turmoil. Despite the claims of the administration, there was no national security crisis. But these unilateral actions are rapidly creating one. Turmoil is never good for farmers. They will be caught in the crossfire of abrupt increases in import prices and retaliatory measures by trading partners. Prices for inputs from Canada, including potash fertilizer could increase, while commodity prices for U.S. farmers could well start to fall as trading partners put new restrictions on U.S. exports. Family farmers and consumers across the continent will pay for the resulting chaos and higher prices. We can expect to see some exemptions as stakeholders from all sectors seek to protect their interests. Already Mexico and Canada have been clear they will hit back hard on the tariffs. None of this commotion and hasty dealmaking bodes well for our food systems.
