Yes, there will be long-term choices to make but here-&-now, we need the necessary support to keep the pumps running whilst future solutions are developed. If it makes economic sense, perhaps we need to take the same view as the Dutch and increase flood protection standards ?
Costs of pumping flood away away from low lying areas escalating as the atmosphere heats, causing budget headaches. The bigger issue is that pumping is not a viable long term option as rainfall and floods inevitably get bigger. Hard choices are coming. theguardian.com/environment/…

Internal Drainage Boards help carefully manage water levels in over 400 #SSSIs. Very important that our water networks are maintained not only to move water from floods, but for droughts too. @ADA_updates @ciwem next APPG for sustainable drought & flood on 9th Oct
Natural England welcomes @WildlifeTrusts climate adaptation report today. A #NatureRecoveryNetwork that builds resilience and adapts to change is essential to address #ClimateChange. We look forward to accelerating our work with @defragovuk and partners.

Enforcing our 9m bylaws is crucial to ensure machinery has the space needed for watercourse maintenance. We encourage planting on the non-working bank to provide habitat and create shade. If you're considering this, please consult our engineers for assistance. #consenting 🚜

While it may look pretty, Himalayan balsam is a invasive plant damaging the UKs rivers. It can grow 7m high, produce up to 800 seeds per plant and shoot them up to 7m away. A 🧵about this invasive species 👇

España es el país que más presas destruye de Europa. En medio de la sequía, son muchos los ciudadanos que no entienden su destrucción y los expertos ven necesarias las presas en un entorno cada vez más seco y con menos precipitaciones. 👉shorturl.at/J73bv Vía @larazon_es
