Most newsletter engagement advice is shallow: → “Write better subject lines!” → “Send at the right time!” → “Shorten it!” Here's what really matters: 📩 Opens are good 🔗 Clicks are better 💬 Replies are gold I call it the Inbox Trinity. Which are you optimizing for?

Want to grow your email list? Take notes from this strategy. I chuckled at first too. This feels really old school. And digital sign-ups would be a lot easier for them to process. But it really matches the vibe of Hobby Lobby, doesn’t it?

Questions that don’t matter: “When is the best time to send?” “How long should my newsletter be?” “What list size do you need to monetize?” Questions that do matter: “Can I show up at least once a week?” “How long does this email need to be?” “What will help my subscribers?”

Most people don’t unsubscribe because your newsletter is bad. They unsubscribe because something changed. New format? New tone? Different flow? People sign up for a familiar experience. If you shake things up too much, they’ll find the exit. Have you ever seen this happen?

Beyond that, what keeps you up at night? For me it was realizing that how I grow my email list matters just as much as how often I create. What you project is what people come to expect. And building an audience around something I didn’t want to keep offering... Felt like building a business I’d slowly come to resent. I don’t want thousands of half-interested subscribers. I want alignment. An authentic audience who actually connects with where I’m going.

Opens and clicks get all the attention, but replies are the real power move. More replies = ✅ Better inbox placement ✅ Higher trust signals ✅ More content ideas Ask your subscribers a question. Start a real conversation. How often do you optimize for replies?

Ok, hear me out. Your newsletter is a lot like your favorite coffee shop. If the menu, vibe, or layout suddenly changed, you'd feel thrown off. Might even stop going. Readers expect a familiar experience. Change too much, and they’ll leave. Consistency > Surprise Agree?

Your email list is like a plant. Ignore it long enough and it dies… except way more passive-aggressively.

Most creators don’t have an audience problem. They have a consistency problem.

Today I learned you may not know something about me. I'm mostly posting on LinkedIn now. Yeah, the resumé place... It's actually a lot more interesting than it seems. I wanted to grow on X but it's a ghost town around here rn.
