Response from EU when developing countries asked for concessions was a clear no. Now we see news that CBAM revenue will be used to compensate EU exporters & exceptions are being carved out for US industry too. Amazing. CBAM as a tool to specifically screw over poorer countries

It takes a lot of effort to figure out the multiple drivers behind Himalayan disasters. Doing so is necessary to ensure the right adaptation policies are framed and future disasters are mitigated. Lazy attributions to climate change are both distracting and unhelpful
indiatoday.in/opinion/story/… Imagine a glacier boulders days of rainfall all letting go at once. That’s what may have hit #Dharali last week. And, while we love to call everything a “cloudburst”, was Dharali flash flood really caused by one? Do read this article I wrote for @IndiaToday after speaking to seasoned experts and emerging researchers who are currently neck-deep in finding what triggered the Dharali flash flood on August 5. #UttarakhandFloods #Uttarkashi

This was the second-most covered climate paper in media last year. Indian media, too, covered it uncritically. Looks like it might be retracted soon. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. And media is not trained to assess such evidence nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

My article in @the_hindu - India’s presence amid a broken template of geopolitics To get its economic and technological trajectory right, India needs to get its geopolitics right It is time for India to punch it’s weight and enhance its global presence

Energy planning for any country should be based on independent assessment. Land & resource availability, safety & regulatory structure & governance etc are all legitimate factors. But opposition (to nuclear) based on nothing but paranoia exported by Green Party in Germany is sad

Operation Sindoor has firmly established that there is significant space for a military response to terror attacks until the nuclear thresholds are reached. Pakistan always knew this, as it had been established during the Balakot air strikes in 2019. Op Sindoor has now carved this reality on the tarmacs of Pakistani airbases. This thread from @tjayaraman spells out some interesting implications of President Trump’s 20th Jan 25 Exec Order quitting the Paris Agreement, various actions under the Convention and prior climate finance commitments of the US. Chickens coming home to roost!

An interesting take on the second US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement last week by veteran scientist-cum-negotiators @KanitkarT and @tjayaraman
Adherence to multilateralism is not genuflection to a moral principle but necessitated by the inherent and irreducibly global nature of the global warming challenge. With @tjayaraman thehindu.com/opinion/lead/br…

At this stage of India’s growth, any talk of “de-growth” ( regardless of the motivation: inequality, climate etc.) is not only poor economic logic - but also immoral - given our average standard of living.

Someone needs to explain basic climate science to all the rich countries at #ICJ that are rejecting the notion of historical responsibility. That warming is directly proportional to *cumulative* emissions because CO2 stays in the atmosphere for millennia

The language of "no new fossil fuels" is easily co-opted by rich countries because "no new" is often only a constraint on those who haven't built fossil fuel infrastructure over 200 years. Too many climate advocacy groups use "no new" rather than pushing the richest to phaseout

An eminently readable thread by @tjayaraman . Such papers were predicated by SDG 16 envisaging strengthening Institutions, like Governance. ‘Nationally Determined’was key mutual assurance that led to Paris Agreement and such ‘equity free’ approaches will weaken its implementation
HOW "BEST AVAILABLE SCIENCE" MAKES IT ALONGSIDE YOUR MORNING COFFEE AS NEW CLIMATE POLICY.. A classic example of how climate-scenarios-based "science" leads to so-called "policy analysis" that feeds the global North narrative. At lightning speed by 16th August @CarbonBrief has a comment out on a paper that has just been published on 12th August (see here for paper nature.com/articles/s41558-0…).

@CSEINDIA makes a surprising turn towards cheer-leading for carbon markets in India, moving away from its well-known stance of caution on market-driven approaches. Here is a quick deconstruction of the most problematic aspects of this new turn.... Excellent bold piece that calls out the reality of the constant attempt to impose "ecological" solutions by fiat from above!! In fact, such solutions are not even the balanced scientific judgement that is required in dealing with phenomena with multiple causes and multiple channels of action. Instead one particular discipline, and one particular perspective is allowed to run away with the solution discourse. This paralyzes even well-meaning political leaders and bureaucrats into inaction - who are faced with unimplementable "structural" solutions alongside lack of input and effort on step-by-step processes and actions that would provide tangible relief. Much also depends on the composition of the committees of experts that are appointed. If unbalanced in character, lack of balance is possible in many ways, then unbalanced recommendations are the outcome!! @ramakumarr @KanitkarT @sciencebwoy @krishnamku @gsaipsn @MadhuraFAS @mssrf @doctorsoumya @cabcmssrf @nramind @karuppadanna
