Top row, left-to-right: a Byronic handsome man in black, a palace, a dark figure burning in hellfire, a masked female assassin of dark complexion holding a dagger, a serpentine forest trail at night marked with red flowers.
At the center, next to a silver plume, is the text: “This world, my dear, is the slaughterhouse of noble ideals.”
Bottom row, left-to-right: a dark gaslit street, a gaslit city blanketed in coal smog at night, a young woman in a Victorian gown, wrought-iron gates opened to a foreboding foggy estate in the dark, a trail of red petals leading to a dark stone temple gate.
ALT Excerpt:
A gaunt mouse snatched bread crumbs from my lunch tray. I did not have the heart to give her a name, afraid I might lose her, too.
The lingering scent of mud and mildew hung in the air, a long-forgotten tomb. The bed’s cast-iron rods dug into my ribs through the thin mattress. I clenched my jaw to keep my teeth from chattering and pulled the threadbare blanket tighter around my body, hugging my knees to my chest. It did little against the chill creeping into my bones. The raging blizzard had transformed the courtyard into a churning white sea, rattling the broken window shutters hanging askew.
I was not allowed visitors or to set foot outside. The faded floral pattern of the peeling wallpaper was my only reminder of life beyond these walls. The medications I was forced to swallow left a cotton taste in my mouth and a dull ache in my skull. At least no screams echoed through the halls today.

That's about it, folks. Are you inspired and ready to get writing?
Thank you for your company this week.
Sending best wishes for all writerly stuff in the coming week - whether that's drafting, writing, editing, submitting, etc x x
Q3: #TuesdayWritingHour
Do family or friends gift you notebooks or other writing gifts?
In recent years, my family have acknowledged the importance of writing in my life and started gifting me books and writing-related stuff (see my answer). 📚🙂
A3: My fav gift this Christmas was my Bodleain Library sign, which hangs on my door (Silent Please). I also have a rather special typewriter gifted to me by Mr.M for a wonderful story acceptance featuring the Olivetti Valentine typewriter ❤️
Q2: #TuesdayWritingHour
Epistolary books - love them or hate them?
Have you ever used the structural device of a letter, email, or other communication within your story-writing or novel-writing?
Did you have an airmail friend when younger?
ALT Festa Junina GIF by Grupo Educacional Bom Jesus
A2: I have The Correspondent by Virginia Evans on waitlist with the library. It's a novel of letters sent and received, where you learn about the narrator through those letters. I'm looking forward to reading it.
Welcome to this week's #TuesdayWritingHour
How on earth is it the end of April already?
What have you been up to this week - any writing, submissions, acceptances?
I surprised myself - answer below!
A1: I haven't been able to write since my wee brother died, but surprised myself the other morning when a whole 1000-word story poured out. No idea if that length will appeal to TPF, but I've also now written a 3000-word one. Relieved. ✍️ ❤️
I'll be hosting #TuesdayWritingHour tomorrow, 28th April, starting at 11am BST. Do pour yourself a cuppa, and join us - everyone welcome to discuss writing, books, and all types of writerly stuff!
