❗️In the absence of neurological deficit or uncontrollable pain most disc herniations do NOT need surgery❗️
1 year ago this crossfitter was advised to have surgery for her L5/S1 disc extrusion. She declined and opted for rehab instead.
12 months later she is pain free, deadlifting her own body weight, performing cleans & squats and is now returning to CrossFit.
Advice, patience and structured rehabilitation will work well for most patients.
💡Remember that approx 70% of the herniated nucleus purposes will undergo resorption over 12-18months post herniation.
Our job is to guide patients over this time - reassure them and minimise reinjury while simultaneously building physical robustness so they can go on to do what they want to do.
