This is absolutely obscene, and cannot be allowed to happen.
Dartmoor's hill ponies have grazed those commons for longer than there has been a country called England. Fewer than a thousand are left, down from six thousand a generation ago. The United Nations listed them as endangered in 2023. So, naturally, the body charged with protecting nature has decided to get rid of nine in ten of the survivors. There is a process, obviously. Natural England's new grazing contracts now count the ponies in the same bucket as the cattle and sheep. A commoner with a fixed quota has a choice: keep a semi-wild pony worth nothing at market, or use the slot for a lamb he can sell. Guess which one survives the spreadsheet. The rest are gathered in the autumn drifts, and with nowhere to put thousands of unhandled moorland ponies, the next stop is the abattoir. Natural England would like it noted that it has not ordered a cull. It has merely built a machine whose only output is a cull, switched it on, and handed the bolt gun to a farmer so the fingerprints land elsewhere. Very tidy. And now the funny part. The pony is the best tool on the entire moor for eating Molinia, the coarse purple grass strangling Dartmoor into a brown monoculture. Cattle and sheep won't touch it. The ponies hoover it down and clear the ground for the orchids, the wildflowers and the insects behind them. Remove the ponies and the moor chokes into precisely the lifeless scrubland the contract was meant to prevent. So the conservation strategy, in full: protect the habitat by deleting the animal that maintains the habitat. A masterclass. Better still, Natural England's own Fursdon review looked at this exact question and told them, in plain English, not to lump ponies in with cattle and not to cut pony numbers. They read it, praised it, said they fully supported it, then did the precise opposite. Four thousand years these animals have run Dartmoor with no committee and no contract. They could be gone within one, and the people who did it will write it up as a win for nature.

Wait, so the MPs largely voted against it and yet its still being implemented? The fuck is the point in voting at this point
Replying to @elliereeves
If it was so important for you, how come you didn't vote in favour of it in March? Only John McDonnell out of your 400 MPs voted in favour. You are a hypocrite, just like all the rest.

Today Sir Keir Starmer announced a full ban on under-16s using the major social media platforms. It will be sold to you as protecting children. Read the mechanism, and you find something else entirely. You cannot stop one child from logging in to Instagram without establishing the age of every adult logging in. And you cannot check everyone's age without forcing every pensioner, every worker, every student to prove who they are. "Child safety" is the cheese in the mousetrap. The child is the shield. The adult is the target. We have seen this exact identity layer before. Last September Starmer announced the BritCard, a digital ID he wanted made mandatory for the right to work. 2.7 million of us signed against it, the polling collapsed, and the government retreated. But notice what was never withdrawn: the plumbing. The GOV. One Login, the digital wallet, the whole identity scaffold, quietly kept building while our attention was allowed to wander. Now a policy arrives that cannot function without it. This is not speculation. Phase 2 of the Online Safety Act already runs more than five million age checks a day, most of them on adults reaching for perfectly legal content. One age-verification contractor was breached and roughly 70,000 government identity documents walked out of the door. And Britain already arrests more people for what they post online than China, Russia, Belarus or Germany. If the government were serious about children it would ban the smartphone in the school: cheap, targeted, proven. It refused, and voted the measure down. It chose instead the path that verifies the entire adult population. Ask yourself why. The Ministry of Truth does not arrive shouting censorship. It arrives smiling, with safeguarding legislation. Papers please… Read more... 👇 labourheartlands.com/starmer… #DigitalID #OnlineSafety #socialmediaban #STARMER

MISSING COMPLETELY from the Court of Appeal judgment was that 1. Palestine Action was seeking to end a genocide 2. The weapons they destroyed at Elbit were intended for use in that genocide The Court of Appeal judges will be damned by history for siding with the genocidaires
The Court of Appeal has just described Elbit as “a company pursuing a lawful business”

No thought of ‘safety and happiness’ of all those Palestinian children who are being murdered daily ! @Keir_Starmer
I am simply not prepared to be a bystander when the safety and happiness of our children are at stake. We will ban social media access for under 16s, and give children their childhoods back. Read more about it here: keirstarmer.substack.com/p/g…
Community note
The platforms, like Apple iOS/iPadOS/macOS, Android, Google Chrome and Microsoft Windows have parental controls that give parents the tools needed to restrict or block underage children access to social media. support.apple.com/en-us/105121 families.google/familylink/ support.microsoft.com/en-us/family-s… Banning will just encourage VPN usage

So appears I'm not liked by at least 1 senior govt adviser. That's a badge I'll happily pick up off the floor and wear with dignity and honour. Here's a hint. Sort out the water industry, fix our rivers and you need never speak my name ever again. Massive thank you once again to Patrick Galbraith @PaddyGalbraith and all at the @Telegraph for the coverage and support. instagram.com/reel/DZkxUeMgu…

Among much utter mince uttered by the English Court of Appeal today. Lady Chief Justice Carr said that the suffragettes were non-violent and did not plan any actions in secret. Which is so ignorant of history I don't know where to start...

Police made 2700 arrests under terrorism laws in the UK for protesting peacefully against the banning of Palestine Action. It cannot go unchallenged. UK’s chief prosecutors must now decide whether to prosecute them. Urge them not to amnesty.org.uk/get-involved/… via @amnestyuk

This Governments branding of protest as 'terrorism' has seen grandparents arrested and dragged through the courts simply for holding up signs. It's deeply authoritarian when people are speaking out against a genocide and for a free Palestine.

Your reminder today, as no one will report it, that the leading children's protection charity in the UK, NSPCC, opposes a blanket ban on social media, along with many other children's safety groups. This is what they've said: "But for countless children, especially those who feel shut out or unheard offline, social media isn’t a luxury. It’s a lifeline – a source of community, identity, and vital support. “A blanket ban would take those spaces away overnight and risks driving teenagers into darker, unregulated corners of the internet. Everyone involved in this debate will have the best interests of children at heart, but children’s fundamental right to participate safely in the digital world, to access information, to connect with peers, and to have their voices heard must be protected. They should not be stripped of those rights because tech companies have repeatedly failed to build platforms that protect them."

Parliament should reverse the decision to proscribe Palestine Action urgently before we see large numbers of elderly people in particular being dragged before our courts. Classifying protest through direct action as terrorism brings Parliament & our judicial system into disrepute

THIS!
Today’s ruling to uphold the UK government's proscription of Palestine Action is a travesty of justice. One by one, the very foundations of our democracy are being destroyed — all to oil the wheels of British complicity in genocide. Our government has participated in the mass murder of Palestinians. That is the real crime, and we must bring about justice.
