Part of my original vision behind Jobs on Toast, was that one day every university will have a careers programme for its researchers, supporting all career paths and options. Thanks to @MarykateUCC for sharing details of The Odyssey Programme at UCC 👇 buff.ly/2C9JPuo

For years this platform has been a fantastic way to share information about PhD career options & feel part of a wider community. However I’ve decided to suspend posting from this account, until I feel comfortable again with the direction of the platform & its content.

A few words about resilience: I recently reviewed the landscape of independent resources for PhDs leaving academia on behalf of industry jobs. I was shocked to discover that most of the blogs and podcasts active 4 years ago are gone now! I was asking myself: did people move on and modify their mission, or did they go out of business? Indeed, this is not an easy topic to take on, and the job market is changing faster than ever. I feel that those who treated this field as a mission not just a source of money, stayed. The rest dropped out. And hey, resilience is the factor for success #1! (I’m attaching the link to Sam Altman’s interview on resilience in the comments below). Here, I would like to acknowledge the titans of work who stayed in the field after the pandemic and are still helping PhDs grow against all odds — please follow them! 1. Jen Polk — Founder & CEO @FromPhDtoLife, 2. @Andrew_Akbashev — LinkedIn’s no #1 speaker on behalf of academia & academics, 3. David Mendes — Founder, Producer & Host @ @PapaPhDPodcast, 4. @verabschan — Host @ PhD Coffee Time, 5. Vicky Sherwood — Founder & CEO @BiomedBadass, 6. Eric James Stephens, PhD — Founder & CEO @ Educators Network, 7. @cjcornthwaite — Founder & CEO @ Roostervane, 8. @chrishumphrey — Founder & CEO @ @jobsontoast, 9. @clcaterine — Author of “Leaving Academia: A Practical Guide,” 10. @dgiltner32 — Founder & CEO @ Turning Science into Things People Need, 11. Danielle De La Mare — Host @ Self-Compassionate Professor, 12. @Nick___Edwards — Host @ Once a Scientist podcast, 13. @salmon_phd — Author of “Beyond Academia: Stories and Strategies for PhDs making the Leap To Industry,” Best of luck to all the new yet how accomplished folks in the field, Aditya Mahara, Ph.D., @EliTheScientist, Ricky Patel, PhD! Stay strong. #WAGMI! #Resilience #PhDtransition #CareerAdvice

I have a PhD in nanophotonics from @dtutweet. Then, I moved to development of software products for antenna analysis. Later, I moved to sales and marketing in the same company. Working with 📡 and 🛰 companies and organizations. Great to work with technology, R&D and business🔝

I went to the University of Nottingham this week, to talk to researchers in the Department of Psychology about their career opportunities outside of academia. Lots of great questions and discussion! Thank you @DrDanielJolley for hosting me, and for taking this fine picture!

It was great to have @jobsontoast join us @Notts_Psych to discuss non-academic careers with our PGR and postdocs. The event also included input from @UoNCareers on careers support within the university. Of course, there was also a Networking Lunch! It's been a fun afternoon!

A PhD researcher has developed a survey as part of a consultancy internship with us.The survey aims to help us better understand researchers' attitudes towards career development training. We will be donating £1 for every survey completed to the Independent Food Aid Network.

What questions do grad students/postdocs have about using LinkedIn? #PhDcareers #PhD #GraduateSchool @PhDVoice #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter @AcaHumanities @OpenAcademics @jobsontoast @careerconversa1 @PapaPhDPodcast @HireHigherEd @thephdstory #PhDchat #PhDlife
PSA: If you're a grad student/PhD candidate (Especially in STEM, but others too), CREATE a LinkedIn profile. As someone part of interview/hiring processes in multiple industries now, THAT IS the first thing people will check. #PhDlife #PhDchat #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter

It can be frustrating when your job application is rejected because you’re told you're ‘overqualified’ 😔 You can find out why employers may be giving you this response, and learn how to prevent it from happening in the future, in this article: buff.ly/3oYH9el

Calling all researchers - recognise your PhD for what is really is: a fixed-term job, not a passport to a professorship. In this article I explain the importance of planning towards a job outside of academia, even if an academic route is your plan A. buff.ly/3OVGaWT

I love this illustration of the career of a Worker Bee, showing the roles each bee fulfils during its life 🐝 If a bee can be this versatile, then so can you, when it comes to switching into a new career path outside of academia! Photo: ‘Beezantium’ exhibit at @thenewtsomerset.

The sheer range of jobs outside of academia can make it difficult for researchers to decide exactly what job they want to do! In this article I lay out a strategy researchers can use to narrow down their search - by focussing on specific job titles: buff.ly/3WxF7hE

At some point in the next year and change I am going to start looking for work outside of academia. To be completely honest, I have NO IDEA what that looks like. It's a bit scary to not really know what I want to do precisely. How did people find out what they wanted to do?

If you’re nearing the completion of your PhD or post-doc and you’re considering your career options, think carefully about whether this is the kind of environment that you want to continue to work in. Outside of a university, you may find better pay and working conditions.
Many of you aren’t aware of what is going on at UK universities A spiral of low pay, pension cuts and casual contracts have plunged the nation into strike Students won’t graduate. Some of the most talented people will leave. Universities will lose accreditation 1/4

My partner: look at you, you're no longer that miserable academic. You believe in yourself and have a higher self-esteem. Yes, these changes are so real that even people around us notice. So consider #altac @AcademicChatter
