Train the Game, Not the Drill
💬 One of the most common mistakes in coaching is confusing activity with learning.
Players can complete:
•Passing patterns
•Unopposed drills
•Technical circuits
…perfectly.
Then struggle to perform the same actions in a game.
❓Why?
▶️ Because football is not just a game of techniques.
▶️ Football is a game of:
•Decisions
•Perception
•Adaptation
•Problem-solving
▶️ The best coaches understand that if you want players to improve in matches, training must look, feel, and demand similar behaviours to those found in matches.
▶️ This is called Representative Learning Design (RLD).
Simply put:
📌 The game should be your teacher.

📌 Build practices that improve performance beyond training ⬇️⬇️
➡️ The R.E.P. Framework
R – REPRESENT THE GAME
✅ Ask:
•What match situation am I trying to improve?
Examples:
•Playing through pressure
•Breaking a low block
E – EXPOSE PLAYERS TO THE PROBLEM
✅ Allow players to experience:
•Pressure
•Space
•Opponents
•Decision-making
❌ Avoid solving every problem for them.
P – PROMOTE TRANSFER
✅ Ask:
•Will this happen on Saturday?
•Will players recognise this situation in a game?
❌ If the answer is no:
Redesign the practice.
Motivation is a facinating thing.
When I started it was to spend time with my son.
It turned into seeing how far I could go with my coaching.
Now, it's to have a positive impact on others (as you can see in the photos)
What's your motivation and has it changed? #SundayShare
One of the biggest mistakes in youth football:
Acting like development and winning are opposites. ⚽️
I don't think they are.
In fact, I think players need both.
Here's why 🧵

Possession Breakout Practice:
✅Topic: Breaking lines
💠Principle: Receive between lines
💠Time: 4 x 6 minutes
💠Area: 65 x 56 yards
💠Players: 15 outfields 1 GK
✅Set-Up
💠Team Blue: 9 players
💠Team Red: 6 players
💠Team Red starts in the possession area with 3 Blue players pressing, creating a 6v3.
✅How It Works:
💠Phase 1: Team Red completes 6 passes, then 3 Red players break forward to create a 3v2 and try to score.
💠Phase 2: After the attack ends, Team Blue builds out in a 9v6 and tries to score in the mini-goals.
✅Coaching Points
💠Receive between lines with an open body shape.
💠Play forward quickly when the opponent is disorganized.
💠Make sure the 3v2 ends with a shot.

Shouting instructions every 10 seconds from the sideline is making your players worse.
When players rely on your voice to decide, they stop thinking for themselves.
The best coaches are the quietest on matchday.
Because the coaching was already done in training.
Talent without courage doesn't win games. ⚽️
Over 15 years of coaching, I've seen this again and again.
Many players have ability.
Far fewer have the courage to use it when it matters.
Here's what I mean 🧵
Complex, not complicated.
This is the first in a poster series exploring the principles of play — the ideas beneath formations, tactics, styles, and coaching preferences.
Part 1: strip the game back to its essential truths.
It's Principles.
