Planned and devised by a crack London team @AlexGalpin79 @alexkf11990 and Kieran Hawkes aka ‘Chesney’ @Hidden1History !
On Saturday we’ll be escorting @almurray aka Sunray and members of the @WeHaveWaysPod (faaaamily) on a sponsored march across London in support of @FinleysTouch
We’ll be making sure he keeps the map the right way up!
We’ll cover almost 22 miles of London’s wartime landscape, the start line is Golders Green 0845 with a lunch stop at the world famous @FrenchHouseSoho (All hail the Ale) ending at the Imperial War Museum Lambeth @I_W_M and finishing at the @thethreestags
We’ll have two amazing speakers in @eatmatt talking about Virginia Vernon who was responsible for the welfare of ENSA performers around the world during the Second World War and Adam @UpTheAirborne Fenwick who will talk about 12 Para and the battle of Breville in Normandy 1944!
Why do we do it? To raise funds for this amazing charity who supports children with cancer and their families when they need it most.

From the unpublished memoir of Victor Jones kept at IWM, describing food shortages in the camp:
Rations were very meagre indeed, and after a couple of days, there was a sad lack of firing for cooking ... We were able after a few days to purchase a few vegetables from the Greek villagers, but the prices were prohibitive, and the demand very large, so only a fortunate few were able to take advantage of this. One or two chaps were caught going through the wire in order to get to the village and get food, and they were punished by being kept on water for 24 hours. A warning was given out that future offenders could, and would, be punished by death. Two chaps who were caught after the warning, were sentenced to be shot, but the Australian Padre intervened and pleaded for them, and they managed to obtain a remission of their sentence. It was amazing to see the rapid havoc that bad water and short rations brought about. Cheeks soon hollowed, and bones began to protrude.

Crete 2026. Truly a time of gifts! Two weeks in the most beautiful of landscapes, following in the footsteps of the ill fated Allied soldiers, with excellent company, British, New Zealand, Australian, American and Greek. Same time next year, right?

The tholos tomb of Maleme. A late Minoan (14th-13th century BC) burial chamber carved out of the hillside and built up in stone with a corridor leading to it. Discovered and quickly looted in the early 20th century and damaged during WW2 but excavated properly in the 1960s.

We made it! Down to Hora Sfakion, where thousands of Allied troops were successfully evacuated from a tiny beach thanks to a truly heroic effort by the Royal Navy! Thousands more would be left behind, many to spend the remainder of the war as prisoners with a journey back across the mountains and hellish conditions in the POW camp at Thessaloniki and various other camps in occupied Europe.
A lucky few escaped into the mountains and were taken in by Cretans at tremendous risk, being hidden in caves, shepherd's huts and nooks in houses and monasteries. These men would eventually be rescued by members of the Special Operations Executive in conjunction with the Greek resistance.
