Vital NHS pilot schemes to treat people living with type 1 diabetes and disordered eating (T1DE) are set to close due to lack of funding.
Due to the complex relationship between insulin restriction, weight and eating disorder behaviour, T1DE is extremely difficult to treat. It requires a team with expertise in both eating disorders and type 1 diabetes.
NHS England have commissioned a series of pilots to address this care gap since 2019, and early evaluations of the pilots showed improved patient health outcomes and halved the cost of inpatient admissions.
We firmly believe these pilot schemes must remain open. We will continue advocating on behalf of the community to ensure that the voices and lived experiences of people affected are heard clearly by the decision-makers who shape these policies.
