And this is no longer about one bill but a system. When any legislation can be buried by procedure in the House of Lords, the question is: why do appointed figures, political, professional or ecclesiastical, hold the power to override the elected will of the people?
As a priest of @churchofengland , I am dismayed that @ArchbishopSarah @CottrellStephen and the rest of the bishops have not only failed to confront this, but continue to benefit from it. None of us can claim moral authority while occupying seats that depend on power without democratic consent. Silence in the face of this is not neutrality but complicity.
A chamber built on appointment cannot claim democratic authority. When unelected voices can block the will of the Commons, it is not scrutiny but obstruction. It is power without mandate, authority without accountability, and influence without consent. And where power refuses accountability, it loses its moral claim. The bishops should know this all too well as trust in them in the church is at a very low ebb indeed.
Reform of the second chamber is no longer a matter of preference, it is an essential matter of justice. Democracy cannot survive where power answers only to itself.

MoJ concerns over the IoM's assisted dying bill revealed. The ECHR ruled that whilst there were no breaches in regards to voluntary euthanasia itself in a case in Belgium, post-death review was insufficient. IoM is amending their bill for re-submission.

The opponents take a “the end justifies the means” approach. Watch out for their biased “polls”, lies about assisted dying in jurisdictions where it’s legal and other underhanded tactics
Meanwhile, the terminally ill are silenced. They deserve the choice of an assisted death

Real people, real voices.
Terminally ill, mentally competent adults at the end of life, deserve the choice not to endure a harrowing death. To force them through that pain is inhumane. It’s time to back the Bill back again.

Real voices, real people.
Many of us living with terminal illnesses want this choice instead of the current cruel and dangerous status quo.
The Bill wasn’t flawed beyond repair, it was deliberately obstructed by a tiny minority of opposing Peers who tabled over 700 of the 1,200 amendments, including banning holidays and demanding pregnancy tests for men and infertile women.
These were not people looking to improve the Bill. They oppose assisted dying under any circumstances and prevented the Lords from even being given the chance to vote on it.
That is not democracy. It’s obstruction
