Independent education specialist, CST Consultant and Chair of Archway Learning Trust. Former Deputy General Secretary, ASCL and Headteacher, Malmesbury School.
We have asked @educationgovuk to make three changes: DfE and its agencies should not investigate any complaints that have not been first properly investigated by the school or the trust. 1/3
Good to see @CSTvoice taking action on the below issue - calling for urgent changes from the DfE.
"the volume of complaints we are seeing is not sustainable," @LeoraCruddas has told members: story here tes.com/magazine/news/genera… and comments added to our investigation below
My new @resfoundation spotlight out today tackles two policies that break the link between need and benefit entitlement: the two-child limit and benefit cap. Here’s a quick 🧵 on the findings:
I have a new report out today with @instituteforgov on Ofsted and school inspections. With the new Chief Inspector starting next week we thought it would be a good time to reflect on the challenges he'll be facing.
(Thread 1/?)
Great reflection on the outstanding work of CST in 2023 in driving forward on policy. I'm sure that many CST members greatly value the leadership and support they get from Leora and the CST team.
On this eve of New Year's Eve, my reflections on setting the pace on policy – a year of impact at @CSTvoice, with huge thanks to our wonderful, committed and engaged members. linkedin.com/pulse/setting-p…

Here's our final song of 2023, about the deserving folk receiving #NewYearHonours & the contrast with the pathetic cronyism in @trussliz & @BorisJohnson appointees. It's to the tune "There Is Nothing Like A Dame" but called "Does Liz Truss Not Feel Ashamed?" 🎶Happy New Year!🥳🍾
So, it appears to be the day when this deeply flawed and apparently annual report is published. The problems with the analysis in the report are manifold but strikingly they are consistent with last year’s equally problematic version. 🧵 1/11
Our new research has shown schools that remain within their council have continued to outshine those converted to academies.
The report found 93% of council-maintained schools were rated outstanding or good compared to 87% of academies. ⬇️🧵1/4

Yes, Nick has made a huge contribution over many years in education. Made a great difference to the life chances of many young people as CEO @OrmistonAcads
Proud to receive my CBE today at Windsor Castle. I want to pay tribute to all colleagues in schools and trusts who enacted such incredible duty of care during the pandemic - and continue to do so. It is such a privilege to work in education.
Baroness Barran stays on as academies minister - seemingly completing the Department for Education’s new ministerial line-up

I have a feeling that this is something that ASCL advocated a few general elections ago! Hopefully this will gain cross party support and move us on to strong evidence based decisions about what is needed in the curriculum of our schools
Good idea from Labour's Council of Skills Advisers about depoliticising the curriculum: "Establish a broad-based National Curriculum Authority ... for providing a modernised syllabus which is free from Party Political interference". Full report here: buff.ly/3TH2Iu6 (PDF)
Hopefully a period of stability, but we need a strong advocate to speak up for education in cabinet and to fight for funding in a time of fiscal restraint.
“We welcome Gillian Keegan to the role of Ed Sec, but it is a farcical situation that she is the fifth incumbent in 4 months. This revolving door shows a disregard for the importance of what should be a key government post & it must stop.” @RealGeoffBartonbit.ly/3TVwRp3
“We were frankly appalled to hear you talk about people leading our schools & colleges as ‘hanging on to mediocrity’, and that education needs ‘constant attention and pressure to drive it forward’”: our @ASCL_UK @asclpresident letter to the Sec of State: buff.ly/3SEVvtI
This is an invalid conclusion. Evolution of the system means we are not doing a like-with-like comparison, as any year 1 research methodology student could tell you. #ResearchasPropagandatheguardian.com/education/20…
Professional Development in School Trusts – capacity, conditions and culture, a CST ‘Bridge to the Future’ paper (with @katypatten) is out today…a thread. Thanks to @LeoraCruddas and @steverollett of @CSTvoice for this opportunity.
